TITLE:

The use of teaching resources in teaching length: possibilities for the initial training of teachers who will teach mathematics

KEY WORDS:

PAGES: 170
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Educação
SUMMARY:

Considering the importance of proposing, in initial teacher education, practical activities that promote the understanding of mathematical knowledge objects, this research proposes an intervention in the teaching of the concept of length. National and international external assessments have repeatedly indicated the low performance of basic education students in mathematics. This study is grounded in the principle that students have the right to learn meaningfully, through the re-elaboration of historically constructed knowledge (Ausubel, 2003; Freire, 2019; Saviani, 2019), and acknowledges the relevance of didactic resources for learning (NCTM, 2015; Lorenzato, 2012; Passos, 2012; Vale, 1999). The research seeks to answer: how can future teachers who will teach mathematics use didactic resources when addressing the concept of length to foster the development and construction of mathematical concepts? The general objective is to develop, together with pre-service teachers, possibilities for using these resources, by formulating a didactic sequence based on the model by Douady and Perrin-Glorian, covering stages of understanding geometric magnitudes and overcoming their punctual use. It also aims to discuss the use of didactic resources in teacher education in light of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Basic Education Teacher Training. This is a qualitative, exploratory, and intervention-based research, configured as applied research in a multipaper format. The field study will be carried out with undergraduates enrolled in the Mathematics Education course at the School of Education of the University of Brasília, over three academic semesters in three different classes. Depending on each article’s specificity, the study will use systematic and bibliographic reviews, document analysis, field research, questionnaires, and participant observation.
