Man as a subject and contemporary dilemma: politics of masculinities at brazilian NGOs
gender; masculinities; inequalities; civil society.
This research project aims to investigate Brazilian civil society organizations that
have worked with the issue of gender equality, with a special focus on men and masculinities. In recent
decades, male subjects (immersed in their plurality) have been questioned on different fronts, causing
them to abandon the historic privileged place of observers and be placed in the position of being
observed or analyzed by the State, the market and civil society. as political, social and public health
"problems", in view of the problematic social construction of the hegemonic "being a man". This
concern emerged significantly from the UN gender and population thematic conferences in the 1990s,
causing international guidelines on the subject to be produced. These began to influence the way
regional organizations framed the issue of masculinities around the globe. In this direction, the work
aims to investigate whether and how this process took place in Brazil, including, from the methods of
document analysis and interviews, the functioning and performance of these organizations and how they tension the inequalities between the public served.
