SUMMARY:

This study examines the constitution of firefighter-military expertise within the
Officer Training Course of the Federal District Military Fire Department (Brazil), analyzing the
relationship between intensive disciplinary regulation and technical-operational learning. It advances the
hypothesis that the consolidation of professional competence does not depend exclusively on
homogeneous normative internalization, but may coexist with strategic and pragmatic variations in
adherence to institutional norms. The research is grounded in an ethnographic approach with a strong
autoethnographic component, based on field diaries produced during training and subsequent
observations conducted as a monitor and instructor. Drawing on the sociology of discipline, practice
theory, and the sociology of expertise, the analysis identifies empirical indicators of competence
stabilization, including fluency of technical gesture, reduction of corrective interventions, tacit
coordination among peers, situational judgment under pressure, and intersubjective recognition of

performance. The study proposes to investigate wether discipline and competence constitute
interdependent registers of professional incorporation, contributing to debates on socialization in
military institutions and on the relationship between disciplinary power and practical knowledge.
