SUMMARY:

This research examines how Black members of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies during the 57th Legislature (2023–2027) articulate different forms of political capital—with particular emphasis on racial political capital—to strengthen their careers, claim legitimacy in the political field, and advance a racial equality agenda. Drawing on the intersection between Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the political field and Critical Race Theory, this study proposes racial political capital as an analytical tool that unveils how racialized attributes can be mobilized as strategic resources within institutional politics. This form of capital is understood both as a product of the historical trajectories of racial exclusion experienced by the Black population and as an emergent political asset, especially in the wake of affirmative action policies and the growing racial consciousness within Brazilian society. Through a comparative analysis of Black legislators with and without a racialized political agenda—alongside white legislators—the research aims to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for electoral and
institutional success. The primary methodological approach is Qualitative Comparative Analysis
(QCA). Expected outcomes include the systematization of how racial political capital is constructed,
mobilized, and contested within Brazil’s institutional political field, revealing both the resistance
strategies employed by Black parliamentarians and the reactive mechanisms of whiteness.
