THE MEANINGS OF PRO-PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY IN
BRAZIL: PRACTICES, AFFECTS AND VALUES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA
Solidarity, Palestine, Genocide, Gaza
This research is based on multi-sited fieldwork, interviews, and participant observation with several Palestinian and pro-Palestinian groups, with whom I have been working since late 2020. The first version of my doctoral research, initiated in 2021, sought to investigate Palestinian identities in the diaspora, focusing on positive cultural markers that go beyond the definition of Palestinians solely through suffering and violence. However, my entry and experience in the field revealed a distinct demand: solidarity – or the lack thereof. Questions such as “Why don’t evangelicals support us?”, “Why are Arab countries normalizing relations with Israel?” and “Why doesn’t the Arab community in Brazil mobilize for us?” emerged as central in conversations with pro-Palestinian activists and organizations and led me to investigate solidarity since 2022.
