SUMMARY:

The present thesis proposes to develop a genealogy of cultural representations of the Brazilian rural world and its social types, having it as primary source the Martins Pena's comedies. Its aim, also,to analyze the political implications of rural social types in the constitution of regional identities and their relations with the process of political centralization of the Brazilian empire.
