The responsibility of the criminal sys(cis)tem for causing the suicide of LGBT+ people at Professor Jason Soares Albergaria Penitentiary
LGBT+; prision; suicide
The research focuses on the responsibility of the criminal system in the suicides of incarcerated LGBT+ individuals, specifically at the Professor Jason Soares Albergaria Penitentiary in Minas Gerais. The research problem seeks to understand how the actions and discourses of prison agents created conditions that favored the suicides of this population. The general objective is to analyze the relationship between these suicides and institutional practices, investigating whether LGBTphobia and criminal efficiency constitute a systematic project for the elimination of LGBT+. The central hypothesis suggests that, although the penitentiary was established as a reference unit for LGBT+ individuals, discrimination, combined with institutional precariousness, directly contributed to the illness and death of these individuals. The methodology includes a documentary analysis of judicial processes and official reports. Interviews will also be conducted with actors involved in the penitentiary. Finally, the theoretical framework is based on Judith Butler's theory of the precariousness of lives and the discussions on criminal efficiency by Vera Regina Pereira de Andrade, supplemented by Salo de Carvalho's concept of LGBTphobia.
