DEMOCRACY AND PUNISHMENT - HOW THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS CAN REDUCE PRISON OVERCROWDING.
DEMOCRACY – PUNISHMENT - PRISON OVERCROWDING
In the field of the sociology of punishment, this research seeks to evaluate how the social control of the Judiciary and the democratic process in Acre, through its political structures and collective actions, have interfered in the increase in the prison population. Using as strategies: the flow research of 1,114 processes originating from the TJAC and qualitative interviews with former governors, public security secretaries and directors of penitentiary administration, the hypothesis to be proven is that the Judiciary is responsible for mass incarceration, through decisions that favor the most severe punishment regime, and the State of Acre, as it represents a democratic system with low popular participation in the formulation of public policies and weak civic engagement, reinforces the growth of the prison population.
