SUMMARY:

This work, conceived as a draft of the opening chapters of a doctoral dissertation, offers a critical reflection on the growing normativity of numbers and metrics in contemporary legal and economic practices. Drawing on the dialogue between Law and Sociology—particularly through the contributions of Alain Desrosières, Luc Boltanski, Laurent Thévenot, and Marcus Faro de Castro—the research examines how quantification devices and performance indicators have become central to both public and private governance, shaping new forms of cognitive and technical authority. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the text explores the transition from logos to metric reason, discussing the epistemological and political implications of this shift for the legal field. Within the context of agribusiness and agri-food markets, it analyzes how algorithms, indicators, and certifications generate regimes of truth and value standards that constrain legal and economic decision-making. Furthermore, the study seeks to outline the theoretical foundations for a critique of the “measurement infrastructures” underpinning contemporary law and economics, emphasizing the need for complex and reflexive approaches to norm production in highly technified environments. In its final version, the research aims to consolidate a conceptual framework capable of articulating legal metrics, valuation devices, and economic rationalities, particularly through the theoretical and methodological tools of Marcus Faro de Castro’s Legal Analysis of Economic Policy (LAEP), thereby contributing to a legal thought more attuned to the dynamics of power embedded in numerical and technological languages.
