SUMMARY:

In Brazil, the public healthcare system is known as the “United Health System” or Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) and it is universal and free for all. However, the universality concept is not always well understood by the Courts, not even by the Supreme Court, which has been striving for almost 15 years to provide a consolidated interpretation. Thus, although we know that the law is not a seamless web, we can dream that at least the Supreme Court treats it as if it were. Based on this dream of a law as integrity, we selected the most representative cases of the Court that can illustrate a seamless web of decisions, judged or unfinished cases.
