Between rituals and symbols: the trial of the defendants on January 8
January 8, anti-democratic acts, attempted coup d'état, criminal proceedings, Supreme Federal Court.
The theme of this ongoing research refers to the examination of the trial of the defendants on January 8, whose general objective is to understand the practices adopted for conducting the investigations initiated and the criminal actions filed for the trial and conviction of those involved, as well as how these people make sense of this and how to understand the penalties imposed on them. As a result of the events of January 8, 2023, in Brasília, D.F., it was the first time since Brazil's redemocratization through the promulgation of the 1988 Federal Constitution that certain practices were understood as anti-democratic acts and an attempted coup d'état. As a result, approximately 2,000 people were prosecuted and tried directly by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), unlike what has happened at other times in Brazil's history.
