The Financialization of Incarceration Expansion in Brazil
Financialization; Prison; Political Economy of Punishment
This dissertation seeks to understand how certain economic structures shape the Brazilian prison system, focusing on dynamics such as prison financialization and the influence of political groups within the legislative sphere connected to infrastructure, private security, and service provision. In other words, it adopts an approach that returns to the economic roots of imprisonment, revealing it as a mechanism of social control intrinsically linked to the structure of Peripheral capitalism.
