Sexual and reproductive rights in dispute: the mobilization of women victims of the Essure device in Brazil’s Federal District
Essure; Sexual and reproductive rights; Reproductive justice
The theme of this research project is the social mobilization of women victims of the Essure device in the Federal District. Within this theme, my research object is the formation and activities of the Association of Women Victims of Essure in Brazil - AMVEB. Essure is a permanent contraceptive device produced by Bayer Healthcare LLC. and licensed in Brazil in 2009. Despite not having been incorporated as technology available in the Unified Health System - SUS, the device was acquired by ten states of the federation and the Federal District, being offered in public hospitals as a fast, safe and less invasive than surgical tubal ligation. From the mid-2010s, however, reports of serious adverse effects linked to the device began to emerge in Brazil. Through social networks, women who shared suffering and similar experiences with contraceptives began a mobilization process that culminated in the creation of the Association of Women Victims of Essure in Brazil - AMVEB. Having delimited the topic, I propose to understand how the articulation of political and judicial demands for sexual and reproductive rights works in the case of Essure in the Federal District, with special attention to the actions of AMVEB and the interaction of female victims with professionals of the justice system.
