prevention of money laundering; internal risk assessment; determinants of ML/FT risk; money laundering; financial crimes.
Theory: This study aims to discuss risk assessment in the fight against money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF). The research is based on the identification of risk determinants in the Brazilian financial sector, aiming to improve compliance practices in financial institutions. Method: The approach adopted includes a systematic review of the literature on ML/TF risk determinants, with data collected from bibliographic databases such as Web of Science and Google Scholar. The research uses scientometrics to select the best publications and citations over the last 20 years, in addition to a statistical analysis based on the dependent variable Suspicious Transaction Reports (STR) sent to intelligence agencies in Brazil.
Contributions: This study has multiple contributions, including improving compliance practices in financial institutions, identifying areas lacking research, seeking to provide subsidies for the formulation of more effective public policies in the fight against ML/TF, and promoting greater collaboration between financial institutions and intelligence agencies.
