SUMMARY:

The video game industry has become the most lucrative sector in global entertainment, surpassing cinema, music, and streaming (Bernal-Merino, 2014, p.125). In 2024, the global games market is expected to exceed $219 billion, with Brazil standing out as the largest market in Latin America and the tenth in the global ranking, with over 100 million gamers. However, accessibility in video games is still limited. Approximately 9.9% of gamers have disabilities and face significant barriers. Despite advancements such as expanded subtitles and audiogames, few titles offer adequate accessibility options. This dissertation investigates accessibility in video games with a focus on deaf people, hard of hearing, or functionally diverse individuals. The goal is to analyze and propose improvements in the linguistic accessibility of video games, using the computer game "Project Zomboid" as a case study. The research aims to determine whether the resource of easy-to-read subtitles in video games would significantly contribute to accessibility, especially for the deaf, people with hearing loss, or those with language limitations, and whether modding could enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The adopted methodology includes a qualitative and exploratory approach. A bibliographic review on disability, deafness, audiovisual accessibility, and modding was conducted. The study involved interlingual and intralingual translations, as well as practical application of easy-to-read subtitles and visual resources in the chosen game. The results show that the inclusion of easy-to-read subtitles and visual resources in the game "Project Zomboid" improved accessibility without compromising the experience for gamers without disabilities. The research confirms the feasibility and benefits of adaptations for including people with disabilities. Modifications made through modding serve as a model for future accessibility initiatives in games. The research highlights the relevance of audiovisual translation, particularly easy-to-read subtitles, to ensure effective accessibility for people with disabilities in the gaming sector. It is hoped that this work will inspire further studies and contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and accessible gaming environment.
