SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to analyze translation as an adaptation mechanism used by the American company Walt Disney in film versions of preexisting fairy tales, that is, to indicate the possible translation and adaptive strategies adopted by Disney. There is also the intention of highlighting the way in which psychosocial aspects have been addressed over the years by the company, considering that the target audience of the versions adapted into animated feature films is, in general, a child audience. Data indicates that, despite the numerous similarities between translations and film adaptations, the translated texts present differences and particularities when the intended audiences and the participants involved in the translation process are taken into account. In this way, it is possible to include the psychosocial aspects that Disney might be interested in exploring at a given socio-historical-cultural moment. For that, four translations and adaptations of fairy tales of European origin were selected, from the 18th century, originally in German and French: Snow White (1869); Cinderella (1968); The Princess and the Frog (The Frog King) (1869); Rapunzel (1698). These tales were translated and adapted into animated feature films and produced by the Walt Disney Company, in American English, with the following correspondent titles: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937); Cinderella (1950, 2001, and 2015); The Princess and the Frog (2009); Tangled (2010). It should be considered, in this analysis, that fairy tales are defined in a very extended textual genre, that allows infinite mutations in storytelling, and that, at the same time, is subject to rewritings, translations and adaptations in a number of different contexts, such as literature, media and other systems. Therefore, characteristics of children's literature will be considered as well as traits of the literary genre defined by Novaes Coelho, Tatar, Propp, Dalton and Bettelheim, in addition to translation issues raised by Meschonnic, Laplantine, Derrida, Peirce, Santaella, and others, also creation and adaptation issues proposed by Haroldo de Campos and Linda Hutcheon, among other agents of valuable contributions.
