SUMMARY:

The subject of this dissertation is the retranslation into French of a text that I had already translated in my Final Project for a Bachelor's Degree in French Translation, defended in 2021. These are the first two chapters of the book Primavera para Rosas Negras (Spring for Black Roses), a collection of essays by the black Brazilian writer Lélia Gonzalez, published in 2018 by Filhos da África. The general aim of this work is to produce a retranslation of these texts, based on a critical and comparative analysis of my own translation strategies at the two moments and based on intellectual and political distancing and maturing. This process of retranslation is an exercise in linguistic but also political and ethical updating. The challenges of this translation and its retranslation are shaped by the feminist context of the time when Lélia Gonzalez wrote, in the 1970s, placed in perspective with the present day, when I am translating. Lélia was active in the midst of the military dictatorship, when the anti-racist issue was changing face, with the idea of "racial democracy". Her work sought to enlighten the black population about their disadvantaged position in society, in order to contribute to the constitution of the political subject of the anti-racist struggle. This process of translating and retranslating Lélia Gonzalez was marked by the question of the past: how am I, a white Franco-Brazilian translator, supposed to translate a text by a black activist into French today, bearing in mind the place of speech and privilege of whiteness in Brazilian society and the place authorised for black people? Another central issue of the work is the process of retranslation itself: producing a new translation of a text that I had already translated brought up reflections on the updated relationship with the source text and the author, but also on the relationship with my first translation and with myself. In order to address these questions, I used a critical theory of translation and retranslation as a basis, with an emphasis on the decolonial perspective, which inaugurates the critique of Eurocentrism in the social sciences and Western feminism. At the end of this process, I have come to a conclusion: in addition to political issues, questions have emerged regarding the writing of translation as an ethical and aesthetic relationship. Although I chose to translate a Brazilian work emblematic of the reality of a black woman in Brazil into French in order to broaden its access to other linguistic communities, my translation and retranslation inevitably manifested themselves in my own words, sometimes empathetically, sometimes violently.
