TITLE:

Women in Economics: an analysis from different perspectives

KEY WORDS:

bibliometrics, economics, gender, women

PAGES: 41
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Economia
SUMMARY:

This study aims to conduct a scientific investigation into the relationship between economics as a discipline and women. As initially formulated, the topic is undeniably broad. For this reason, it was necessary to narrow its scope to define specific and researchable objects of analysis. To achieve this, three independent essays were developed.

The first and second essays apply bibliometric methods to examine how academic research in economics has addressed women. While the first essay focuses on heterodox economics journals, the second turns to orthodox publications. Together, these analyses make it possible to identify: (i) the main themes most frequently studied, (ii) the authors who stand out in the field, (iii) the existing networks of collaboration, and (iv) the countries and institutions most prominent in this literature. They also allow for an assessment of (v) whether there are significant differences in the ways orthodox and heterodox journals approach gender-related issues.

The third essay uses an original database to examine the academic careers of Brazilian women economists and researchers. Its purpose is to highlight patterns and connections between: (i) sociodemographic and academic profiles, (ii) networks and hierarchies in academia, (iii) the intersections between gender equity and academic excellence, and (iv) indicators of academic mobility. The detailed research plan for this stage is presented in Appendix I.
