SUMMARY:

This study investigates the motherhood penalty on wage disparity and women's participation in the Brazilian labor market, using data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua). The data were drawn from the 2023 PNAD Contínua (2^nd quarter), which includes supplementary education data, and the 2022 PNAD Contínua (5^th wave), focusing on "Other Forms of Work." The analysis explores wage differences between men and women and the disadvantages faced by mothers compared to childless women, both in terms of wages and labor market participation. The study examines the impact of variables such as the number of children, the presence of children in specific age groups, access to daycare, and domestic work. The main hypothesis is that women continue to earn lower wages than men, partly because they spend more time on domestic work, including childcare. Consequently, women's reservation wages increase, leading to lower participation in the labor market and lower earnings. Therefore, the study investigates how the motherhood penalty manifests, also comparing women with and without children.
