  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation investigates the relations between narrative voice, Amerindian cosmology, and literary translation based on the novel O som do rugido da onça, by Micheliny Verunschk, and its French translation Requiem pour un MODELO jaguar, by Anne Pouzargues. The research brings together Antonio Candido’s dialectical criticism and Antoine Berman’s criticism of translation, understanding the literary work as a system of formal, historical, and symbolic tensions, and translation as a space of ethical and aesthetic reconstruction. Chapter 1 examines the historical and cosmological lexicon of the onça, its zoological, mythical, and literary figurations, and the contemporary cultural displacements that traverse the sign “onça,” including its reappropriation as a fashion pattern. Chapter 2 presents the national and international critical reception of the novel, mapping the impact of the work, its process of circulation and reception in different contexts, and analyzes, in a specific subsection, the covers and titles of the foreign editions, observing how each literary system visually and linguistically reinscribes Verunschk’s narrative. Chapter 3 constitutes the core of the dissertation: it analyzes the narrative tessitura of the novel, focusing on the “jaguar voice,” its enunciative and temporal modulations, and the challenges of its recreation in the French translation, among them gender marking, the organization of verb tenses, lexical equivalence, and the inevitable softening of the Rosian register. The dissertation concludes by discussing the articulation between myth, temporality, and cosmological vengeance, highlighting how the novel and its translation fabricate worlds through language.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • In Brazilian concrete poetry, some poems stand out for their unique use of media, such as manipulating the physicality of the book page. In the specific case of Poemóbiles (1974), by Augusto de Campos and Julio Plaza, the page is transformed into a manipulable three-dimensional sculpture that results in verbal, visual, auditory, and kinetic meaning. This research aims to translate the Poemóbiles to French according to poetic transcreation, as formulated by Haroldo de Campos, and based on analyses of object-poems grounded in Semiotics. In Translation Studies, we consider the theories of intersemiotic translation and Audiovisual Translation to problematize the concept of the text and how textuality affects the translation of poetry. To delve deeper into the method of transcreation, we analyze the translation A Rosa Doente, by Augusto de Campos, of the poem The Sick Rose, by William Blake. The analysis of A Rosa Doente suggests an approach to poetic transcreation that considers the indexical aspects of the original work in order to effectively modify the process of transcreation composition. The analyses of the Poemóbiles demonstrate that the physical presentation and the reading processs of object-poems highlight the materiality of the book and the page as an integral part of meaning. We therefore emphasize the importance of a translation approach that considers the materiality of poetry as much as its verbal aspect.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This study is dedicated to producing an annotated legal translation of judicial rewritings from a feminist perspective. To this end, the cases Loving v. Virginia (1967) and Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson (1986) were selected. The objective of this research is to produce an annotated translation from a Black and feminist perspective that can contribute to the discussion of judicial rewritings within Translation Studies. As a methodological approach, we adopted translation functionalism, annotated translation, and the development of an annotation typology. Thus, the study integrates social markers such as race and gender alongside the translations. The aim is to enable readers to engage in a broader discussion of topics related to: Black feminism, Feminist Legal Theory, legal translation, and feminist translation. It is thus concluded that this approach is relevant to the research, as it aims to broaden the discussion of judicial rewrites within the field of Translation Studies.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aims to think of translation as a relation through the creation of an abecedary of Antônio Bispo dos Santos. To this end, it adopts the fundamental idea of language as an event, in which Nêgo Bispo’s discourse is a key element for questioning the translator’s ethical, poetic, political, and aesthetic relation when producing a translation. The dissertation analyzes the idea of deformation and deformatting of language through discourse drawing on the practice of translation and analyzes how becoming is a tool of double capture in the translation process and how it is possible, in translation practice, not to succumb to alterity and not to use straitjackets to contain it. This work considers the studies on the poetics of translating and transcreation through the translation of the definitions of the concepts formulated by Nêgo Bispo in his works and aims to be an ethical, political, and aesthetic work drawing on rhythm and its meanings.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Within the framework of translation studies, this dissertation analyses the correspondence of Caroline Schlegel-Schelling (1763-1809), a little-known author and translator of the Jena Circle and German Pre-Romanticism, focusing on the translation of two letters written during the Napoleonic invasions. The study analyses the articulation between translation, history and alterity from the perspective of German Pre-Romanticism, arguing that socio-political instability and constant foreign threat are fundamental to understanding Caroline's epistolary writing. The letters, marked by the urgency of life, uncertainties and reflections on the Other, are analysed in the light of the practice of translation, understood as a network of exchange between eighteenth-century German and contemporary Portuguese. The translation not only reveals aspects of a unique epistolary writing, but also highlights the presence of a revolutionary woman in the context of her time.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation addresses the theme of accessible tourism based on the intersemiotic translation of Brasília's (Plano Piloto) tourist and cultural itinerary, a requirement for obtaining a master's degree in translation studies at UNB- Brasília University. This dissertation is an exploratory study and aims to propose the accessible virtual mediation of a tourist itinerary in Brasília according to the models of semiotic analysis and intersemiotic translation of Lúcia Santaella 2002 and Julio Plaza 2010 respectively. This itinerary includes tourist and cultural points located in Asa Norte, Asa Sul and Eixo Monumental. The semiotic analysis of the so-called accessible tourist and cultural spots in the Brasília region allowed us to identify the main aspects (such as the description of colors and textures, the use of simple and accessible language, and the inclusion of elements that stimulate the senses and enrich the visitors' experience, such as sounds and aromas) to be considered in the elaboration of mediation that includes people with physical, visual, auditory, and intellectual disabilities as well as understanding whether the tourist, when visiting an accessible tourist spot, identifies with the place or develops a sense of belonging.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation proposes an analysis of the word "sea" within the novel Dom Casmurro (1899) by Machado de Assis, using as a foundation the principles of language as described by Cognitive Linguistics (a theoretical group initiated in the United States by independent scholars such as George Lakoff and Charles Fillmore) and the application of these concepts to literature according to Cognitive Poetics, particularly Stockwell's (2002) perspective. The analysis is conducted in relation to the intertextual context of the novel, and the translation suggested at the end of the analysis does not encompass the entire novel nor all mentions of the word, but rather selected excerpts deemed relevant. The research's purpose is to investigate the translation process through the lens of cognitive studies and demonstrate the potential advantages of integrating the two fields (thus, the process itself is the focus). For understanding the notion of context, the theory of Frames (FILLMORE, 1982), the concepts of MCI and Domain (LANGACKER, 1987), and the theory of Mental Spaces (FAUCONNIER, 1994) are employed. To better analyze the interaction between the two literary worlds in terms of intertextuality, the theory of Conceptual Blending (FAUCONNIER, 1997) is used, aiming primarily to explore the theoretical potential in the intersection of cognitive studies and the field of translation.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  •  This study is part of the research line Theory, Criticism, and History of Translation, within the area of concentration Translation in Context. The research describes the translation project of the preface and Chapters I and VIII from the fascicle Les Champignons Hallucinogènes du Mexique: études ethnologiques, taxinomiques, biologiques, physiologiques et chimiques, by Roger Heim and Robert Gordon Wasson, published in France in 1958, about the sacred mushrooms of Mexico. The study aims to promote a critical reading that exposes the coloniality inherent in Western scientific discourse regarding these mushrooms. This research investigates translation as a crucial tool to unveil the coloniality present in historical texts on psychedelic science. The objective is to demonstrate how translation can reveal the colonial dynamics that permeate these texts, allowing a more critical reading that expands the understanding of the power relations that often shape scientific production. The premise of the study shows that, despite their importance to the history and studies of psychoactive mushrooms, these texts reflect a colonial logic. The European and American researchers who wrote them treated Indigenous peoples merely as informants, exoticized and decontextualized their knowledge and practices, and transformed them into commodities. This process involved biopiracy, appropriation, and the erasure of Indigenous narratives, converting traditional knowledge into patents, luxury products, and studies often conducted without consent to serve the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. The study is based on three main theoretical pillars: indirect translation, annotated translation, and translation as criticism of coloniality. Indirect translation is a key aspect, as one of the texts was first translated from English into French before being translated into Portuguese. The annotated translation in this study serves as an invitation to critical reflection, encouraging the reader not only to consume the translated material passively but also to recognize its contradictions, gaps, and impacts. Translation as criticism makes it possible to highlight the layers of coloniality embedded in these texts, revealing that the history of psychedelic science is neither neutral nor impartial. The methodology consists of an annotated translation, with the translator’s notes that highlight the lexical and discursive choices of the original authors that resulted in erasures, cultural appropriations, and the exoticization of Indigenous peoples and their practices.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research proposes the development of a Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras) of Automotive Terms, a material designed to address the lack of accessibility in content related to driver's licensing and automotive mechanics. Initially, the right of Deaf individuals to drive was investigated by analyzing the process of obtaining a National Driver’s License (CNH), linguistic accessibility, and the challenges in understanding automotive terms. The study also highlighted the importance of translating and interpreting technical content, as well as the need for accessible materials and visual resources on automotive mechanics and traffic safety. In the field of Translation Studies, the complexity of translation between Libras and Portuguese was explored, addressing key issues such as the role of translators and interpreters in mediating meanings and adapting theoretical and practical content. The objective of this research was to promote the linguistic and educational inclusion of Deaf individuals in the automotive field through the creation of the Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras). The adopted methodology involved selecting and validating signterms through terminological records, videos, and field research. The selected audiovisual sources were essential for constructing the lexicon, covering topics such as traffic legislation, automotive mechanics, and road signs. To develop the material, 29 technical terms from the field were selected, followed by the creation of terminological records and the stages of verification and registration of the signs used to represent them. The study aimed to ensure precise correspondence between Libras signs and Portuguese concepts, guaranteeing greater accuracy in technical communication. The field research included the participation of Deaf individuals and approximately 30 hearing participants, enabling discussions on the adopted signs and their suitability to the automotive context. The results demonstrated a high level of acceptance among participants, indicating that the evaluated signs were considered precise and appropriate, consolidating the reliability of the developed material. It is expected that the Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras) of Automotive Terms will contribute to the production of other terminological works in different technical fields, expanding accessibility and strengthening the inclusion of Deaf individuals in various areas of knowledge.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • In recent last few decades, Brazil has become the destination for thousands of immigrants from different parts of the world, who arrive here for various reasons. Among the main causes for the increase in global migration are wars, social conflicts, economic crises, climate change and the spread of international organized crime. So the Brazilian Judiciary has been faced with a growing number of cases involving foreign defendants, especially from Latin American countries (BRASIL,2024, p.75-83), accused of various crimes, with International Drug Trafficking being the most recurrent among them. Faced with this scenario, the Judiciary must adopt measures capable of guaranteeing these defendants the rights and guarantees provided for in the Federal Constitution and other legal diplomas in our legal system. One of the main measures is to guarantee their linguistic rights, since many do not speak our vernacular - the Portuguese language. After all, this is the only way to ensure their rights to ample defense and contradiction during the course of the criminal proceedings. To this end, the linguistic-cultural mediation of a forensic interpreter is essential. Through their work (provided for in articles 193 and 223 of the CPP), they will enable the defendants to be linguistically present during procedural acts. Although the importance of the interpreter is recognized, there are not enough qualified forensic interpreters in Brazil to meet the demands of the judiciary (NORDIN, 2018, p.11). Hence this search aims to highlight the important role of the forensic interpreter as a social and public agent, demonstrating the socio-cultural relevance of Translation as a tool to safeguard Human Rights, in particular the Linguistic Rights of immigrants from countries where Spanish is the official language. In addition, through this study, we aim to demonstrate how challenging legal translation/interpretation is, as it requires knowledge of the specialty language of Law. We also sought to contribute to the training of new interpreters by preparing terminographic material in the light of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT), which defines terms as conceptual and denominative units directly linked to a field of expertise, in this case, Criminal Law. Thus, adopting the communicative bias of TCT for terminological selection, we created a unidirectional bilingual vocabulary (Portuguese>Spanish) of legal terms extracted from their natural environment of occurrence, i.e. International Drug Trafficking sentences. In this sense, Corpus Linguistics works as a methodology associated with Terminology and Translation, collaborating in the identification, corpus compilation and selection of terms in Portuguese, as well as pointing out the probable equivalents in Spanish. In this way, we hope that the legal vocabulary will serve as teaching material, which can contribute to the training and professional qualification of new forensic interpreters/translators, as well as a source of consultation and research for professionals who already work in this field.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • In the context of international cultural exchanges, reflecting on the literary movement between Senegal and Brazil is essential for understanding the literary ties between the two countries. This research draws on data from publishers’ catalogs (French, Brazilian, and Senegalese) and bibliographic databases—such as WorldCat, the Catálogo de Teses e Dissertações da CAPES (CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog), and the Cheikh Anta Diop University Digital Library—to offer a comprehensive overview of the literary relationship between Senegal and Brazil through the translations produced and circulated in both nations. Based on these sources, we analyze the evolution of intellectual exchanges and highlight the role of translation in shaping these connections. Our theoretical framework is grounded in the concept of translation as relation, particularly in the works of Henri Meschonnic (1999), Édouard Glissant (1990), Antoine Berman (1984), and Pascale Casanova (2008), along with contributions from scholars such as Dominique Aury (1963) and Jean-Louis Cordonnier (1995).

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Artificial intelligence has sought to position itself as a support tool for promoting accessibility for people with visual impairments. However, the lack of adequate audio description in educational materials still represents a significant challenge, limiting blind students' access to essential visual content in the learning process—especially in fields such as language teaching, where vocabulary and visual context play a fundamental role in knowledge construction. In this context, the general objective of this research is to evaluate image audio descriptions from the Spanish textbook Gente Única generated by artificial intelligence tools, based on audio description guidelines (Motta, 2016). The theoretical framework approaches audio description as a mode of intersemiotic translation, essential for the inclusion of people with visual impairments in language learning. The study also discusses the role of AI as a support tool for accessibility, highlighting its potential to produce automatic audio descriptions. A qualitative, exploratory-descriptive methodological approach is adopted, through which audio descriptions generated by AI tools—such as ChatGPT, Zapia, Be My Eyes, Lookout, and Copilot—are evaluated based on criteria such as the description of characters, settings, use of verb tense, and interpretative impartiality. The results indicate that although AIs show potential to generate audio descriptions, there are significant limitations, such as a lack of detail in describing characters and settings, the absence of frame identification, and the omission of contextual information.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The main objective of this present work has been to conduct research about book subscription
clubs for children, focused on children's audience, analyzing the amount of translation and
national books in these services. The cut for the analysis is done with the selection of books
for the age group of 7 years old in the clubs Minha Pequena Feminista, Leiturinha and
Quindim. In addition, we also discussed the fact of not translating languages but subjects and
statements (Meschonnic, 2010). As secondary objectives, I will make an analysis of texts
translated from different languages and countries in the study section and a survey of the
translators' women present. The work is justified by the investigation of literary genre for
children in the field of translation, assisting in the systematization of information that
contributes to research in the area of literature translation for children (Aseff, 2012). With the
analysis of the graphs generated through a quantitative research, it is perceived a higher
percentage of Brazilian literature (national) within the cutting. Already among the
translations are noticeable some asymmetries of power in the literary system (Venuti, 2019),
and that reflects on translation policies (Santos; Francisco, 2018) and ethnocentrism present
in the quantitative difference of translations from certain countries to the detriment of others
(Oustinoff, 2011). Finally, I observe the influence of the school system on the market
preferences of literature for children (Lima, 2018) and the presence of women translators in
the translation market of this segment of literature.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • For this research, within the field of Translation Studies, a comparative analysis was proposed on how Ruth Barros's Brazilian translation of The Woman's Bible, entitled “A Bíblia para as Mulheres” (2019), aligns with Elizabeth Cady Stanton's feminist perspective (1895), and to what extent it converges with or diverges from the traditional thematic adaptation “A Bíblia da Mulher” (2003) from João Ferreira de Almeida. The objective is to explore how Feminist Translation Studies engage with these texts, particularly in analyzing how they represent the concept of “woman.” In this approach, Stanton challenged the orthodox religious perspective of the 19th century by revising biblical passages that referred to women, demonstrating that the Bible was not written directly by God but rather interpreted through patriarchal lenses. In doing so, she contested the ideas of female guilt and divinely ordained submission. Given this historical context, the research analyzes biblical verses with subversive connotations, drawing on the concept of translation as a cultural and social practice (Sherry Simon, 1996), in dialogue with translation and gender studies (Luise Von Flotow, 1997). The hermeneutics of suspicion approach, as developed by Paul Ricoeur (1986), is used to investigate how these translations and interpretations shape representations of gender, power, and identity in society. This study contributes to broadening the debate on the impact of translation in constructing new perspectives on gender and religion within the Brazilian context, thereby strengthening the field of Feminist Translation Studies.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Translation Studies (T.S.) have evolved to encompass an increasingly broad range of interactions between culture, language, and style, especially in the field of re-translation. The present research proposes a theoretical expansion, centered on the narratives of popular fairy tales, to examine re-translation as an autonomous and dynamic phenomenon, based on contemporary authors such as Vitor Alevato do Amaral, who advocates a polyglot, intertextual, and polyphonic approach to "re-translating" in his article "Broadening the Notion of Retranslation" (2019). A product of interdisciplinary collaboration between Translation Studies, Folklore Studies, Comparative Literature, and the "Theory of Functions", the research aims to explore, experimentally and theoretically, the limitation of the re-translation concept to the relationship between two languages, as argued by Amaral. Although complex, the integration of these disciplines enriches the analysis, allowing for the exploration of cultural nuances and literary transformations that occur over time, aligned with the expansion of this still underexplored concept. The "Hypothesis of Non-Univocity in the Retranslation of Fairy Tales", proposed by the author, serves as a starting point for analyzing the recreation of oral and written narratives, addressing the re-translation's ability to preserve the cultural and stylistic nuances of the original while (i) responding to linguistic and cultural changes in the target audience, (ii) dialoguing with its previous versions, and (iii) allowing the translator to keep the "soul" or essence of the original alive. Finally, it is argued that the observable and essential constitutive aspects of the existence of the popular fairy tale—such as the perpetual oral recreation—may contribute to redefining re-translation as an essentially multilingual and transcreative phenomenon, which more frequently operates in a context of plurality of voices, languages, and cultures than in the restrictions traditionally imposed by bilingualism.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • In this dissertation, we aim to present a translation of Brasília's "Rock Route" into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), highlighting how musical culture and cultural spaces are crucial for identity construction and linguistic inclusion within Brasília's deaf community. We emphasize the significance of theoretical and practical approaches that render the translation process more conscious and humane. The main objective of this dissertation is to propose an annotated translation of Brasília’s Rock Route, specifically within the language pair Portuguese–Libras. Additionally, our specific objectives include: i. developing translation competencies relevant to the rock-themed translation project; ii. identifying how culture has become a significant element in Translation Studies and how cultural spaces have facilitated linguistic accessibility concerning Brazilian Sign Language (Libras); and iii. analyzing the translation diary through an annotated translation grounded in the functionalist theory proposed by Christiane Nord. To achieve these objectives, we conducted a literature review of rock music history, identified relevant authors in Cultural Translation Studies, and adopted a methodology based on Christiane Nord's Functionalist Model. This methodological approach was divided into three stages: a. translation project, b. logbook, and c. annotated translation. Upon completion of the translation process, the annotated translation analysis revealed that culture is fundamental in the translation process into Libras, enabling deaf individuals in Brasília to forge their local identity. Furthermore, the importance of creating a specialized glossary in this field was identified, alongside the necessity for translation studies in cultural contexts to be incorporated into the training of Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (TILSP).

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • In this dissertation, we present an exploratory study that proposes translation solutions for the inherent characteristics of the fantasy literary genre, particularly the shared sense of estrangement between character and reader, which defines the genre. We seek to describe the process of translating fantasy literature from Brazilian Portuguese to Libras (Língua Brasileira de Sinais), to analyze the translation of fantastic elements to Libras through imagery descriptors, and demonstrate the preservation of inherent characteristics of the genre, especially the estrangement. To this end, we selected excerpts from Sarah J. Mass's book House of Earth and Blood (2022) and organized them into three stages of the translation process: Representation of Reality, Estrangement, and Insertion of the Fantastic Element, totaling fifteen excerpts. Subsequently, we developed the translation project following the analysis of the extratextual and intratextual elements of the text as addressed by Nord (2016), organizing the translation process as a Translation Project, Logbook, and Commented Translation. The theoretical framework for this discussion includes: Todorov (2008) and Roas (2014) on fantasy literature; Dollerup (2014) on the indirect translation approach used in this research; as well as Nord (2016) and Barbosa and Costa (2022) on the functionalist bias. We also include other authors who discuss and contribute to the topic. Data analysis showed us that the translation strategies and solutions were satisfactory in maintaining the fundamental characteristic of fantasy literature in the target language: estrangement. However, for the translation to be effective, a Glossary in Libras was incorporated during the process to translate proper names and magical creatures, bringing creative solutions to the final result of the proposed translations. We also conclude that, despite this being a pioneering study, the topic addressed is extremely important for Translation studies, an area that lacks research and academic materials on Libras translations of Fantasy literature.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The research line adopted in this work is Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices from the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (Postrad/UnB). Its object of study is the translation process of institutional informative content produced by the Department of Traffic of the Federal District (Detran/DF) into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), with an emphasis on the specialized lexicon related to obtaining a Driver's License (CNH). The target audience includes Deaf individuals and users of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) who wish to obtain a CNH—commonly known as a driver's license—as well as translators, interpreters, examiners, instructors, and others interested in the field. Thus, the objective is to translate information from Portuguese into Libras, making it available in the form of video guides on the official social media channels of Detran/DF, in order to broaden Deaf people's access to legal guidelines and promote accessibility. The specific research objectives consist of: i) researching existing laws and rights regarding the right of Deaf people to drive and obtain a CNH; ii) analyzing Translation and Interpretation Studies of Sign Languages (ETILS) in search of research focused on translation; and iii) reviewing websites of other State Traffic Departments (Detrans) to verify whether there is formative and informative content available in Libras. The theoretical framework was divided into three parts: the first part deals with translation studies; the second with translation and interpretation studies of sign languages; and finally, with translation processes. The methodological approach was divided into five steps: i) identification of the objective and target audience; ii) receipt of videos sent by the Communication Department of Detran/DF (Ascom); iii) organization of the translation project and preparation of glosses, based on references from Nord (1991, 2005), Barbosa (2004), and Santiago (2012); iv) recording of videos in Libras and translation (voice-over) following the principles of Xavier (2022); and v) validation of the recordings with the Libras team working in the Graduate Program in Translation Studies (Postrad/UnB) and with the team of the “Libras tem Voz” program from the Communication Department of Detran/DF. As a result, nine video guides were produced, offering information in Libras for obtaining a CNH. The set of video guides produced in the project demonstrated that it is possible to combine accessibility, communicative quality, and social commitment in a single product.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research, aligned with Translation Studies and Sign Language Terminology, focuses on the legal vocabulary of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT, Brazil). The study aims to create bilingual videoguides (Portuguese-Brazilian Sign Language, Libras) to ensure linguistic accessibility for the Deaf community, as mandated by Brazilian laws (10.436/2002, 5.626/2005, and 13.146/2015). Methodologically, it adopts a socioterminological approach (Gaudin, 1991; Faulstich, 2016) in three phases: (i) mapping juridical sign-terms in media materials; (ii) validation with Deaf signers and legal experts; (iii) production of multimodal videoguides (Libras, subtitles, audio). Key results include: (a) identification of 35 juridical sign-terms; (b) development of three institutional videoguides hosted on the MPDFT portal; (c) a semi-bilingual glossary accessible via QR code. The study concludes that terminological standardization and assistive technologies are pivotal to enforce Deaf communities’ right to legal information, promoting autonomy and social inclusion.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908), one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian culture, with over 200 short stories to his name, is regarded as a master of the short story genre. To this day, the classic works of Machado de Assis have not lost their relevance; on the contrary, his timeless works continue to gain recognition both in Brazil and internationally, mainly through the translation of his literary works. This dissertation focuses on Machado de Assis’s short story O alienista (1882), aiming to carry out a comparative descriptive analysis of five English translations and their comparison with the source text, focusing on the translation of Machadian allusions with contrapuntal irony (Bakhtin, 2010; Cherlin, 2017; Hutcheon, 1995), addressing the issue of the translator’s (in)visibility (Venuti, 2004) and identifying the predominant translation strategy (Venuti, 2004; Toury, 2012). The corpus consists of the original version of O alienista, available in the Public Domain, and the following translations: The Psychiatrist (T1) in The Psychiatrist and Other Stories (1963), translated by William Grossman and published by University of California Press (USA); The Alienist (T2) in The Alienist and Other Stories of 19th Century Brazil (2013), translated by John Charles Chasteen and published by Hackett Publishing (USA); The Psychiatrist (T3) in Stories (2014), translated by Rhett McNeil and published by Dalkey Archive Press (USA); The Alienist (T4) in The Collected Stories of Machado de Assis (2018), translated by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson and published by Liveright Publishing Corporation (USA); The Alienist (T5) in The Looking Glass: Essential Stories (2022), translated by Daniel Hahn and published by Pushkin Press (UK). This descriptive case study is based on Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory (1990, 2010), Holmes’s model (2004) as expanded by Toury (2012); and Venuti’s concept of translator’s (in)visibility (2004). The comparative analysis is based on the framework proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp (1985), as well as on the theories of scholars such as Leppihalme (1997), Lefevere (2007), Aubert (1998), Molina and Hurtado Albir (2002), among others. The results show that the analyzed translations follow three main directions: 1) domestication (acceptability), with medium to high translator’s invisibility (T1, T2); 2) a balanced approach between domestication and foreignization (acceptability/adequacy), with low translator’s visibility; 3) foreignization (adequacy), with medium to high translator’s visibility (T4, T5)

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This study proposes an analysis of inter- and intralinguistic translation processes applied to a medical work, with the aim of facilitating the understanding of the message by the public affected by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of EDS diagnoses in Brazil, a phenomenon that can be seen both in the expansion of clinics specializing in the treatment of hypermobility and in the organization of educational events aimed at disseminating information about the disease and its consequences. Despite these advances, it appears that much of the communication directed at patients still uses excessively technical language, making it difficult for lay individuals to fully understand. Given this gap, the present work proposes a linguistic adaptation that aims to democratize medical knowledge. To this end, excerpts from the French-language work Ehlers-Danlos, La maladie oubliée par la médecine, by Dr. Claude Hamonet, were selected and analyzed, which were then subjected to inter- and intralinguistic translation processes, resulting in the planning for future production of an informational booklet in Brazilian Portuguese. Considering the invisible but highly incapacitating nature of EDS, it is essential that patients have access to informational materials in their native language, written in accessible language. This measure not only facilitates understanding of the clinical manifestations of the disease but also contributes to the validation of their complaints before the specialized medical community.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation investigates the use of Yorùbá language as an identity and cultural marker in Candomblé, both within religious temples and in digital environments. Situated within the field of Translation Studies, the research approaches Yorùbá as a form of symbolic resistance, carrying untranslatable meanings that are essential to the preservation of African worldviews. Adopting a qualitative methodology, the study examined social media posts from religious institutions, identifying recurrent Yorùbá terms, orthographic variations, and translation strategies. The findings indicate that

non-translation and the preservation of original spelling are common practices, closely tied to identity affirmation, cultural resistance, and the transmission of ancestral knowledge. This work contributes to expanding the understanding of translation as a political and decolonial practice, emphasizing the importance of preserving lexicon and orality in strengthening Afro-Brazilian identity.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Considering the current scenario in Translation Studies—where approaches such as Feminist Translation have gained increasing recognition within the academic field—this paper proposes a reflection on the impact of Luise von Flotow's feminist discourse in academic publications in the area. The research is based on the perspective of intersectional feminism, as developed by bell hooks (1981), and is situated within the context of the fourth wave of feminism, which began around 2012. The main objective is to position the author and translator Luise von Flotow within the landscape of Feminist Translation in Brazil, taking into account her significant contribution to the consolidation of this line of study. Building on works such as those by Macias-Chapula (1998) and Moyano and Gómez (2020), which theorize how the systematic collection of information can provide an overview of what is produced in a field of knowledge, I propose a bibliometric study of master's and doctoral theses defended in Brazil, using the CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog as a source. CAPES is a federal government foundation focused on promoting academic research. The temporal scope from 2013 to 2025 is adopted to cover the most recent period, corresponding to the strengthening of the fourth wave of feminism, and is also linked to the Sucupira Platform, which collects and catalogs all postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) productions in the country. Furthermore, I use search terms to strategically guide the research and access published works related to Translation Studies, enabling my reflection on the topic. After filling out a technical data sheet, with the aim of creating graphs presenting a quantitative analysis of the most cited works and the year in which Flotow is most referenced, a qualitative reflection is proposed. By identifying 2022 as the year with the highest recurrence in the graphs, I propose a view of the post-pandemic scenario and the widespread use of the internet as a research and advocacy tool, which facilitated broad visibility of debates on women’s rights, feminism, and feminist translation.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The dissemination of K-dramas in Brazil has historically been linked to fansubbing. Their growing popularity over the past decade has led many audiovisual companies, particularly streaming platforms, to invest in translating the South Korean TV dramas into Portuguese. This study focuses on subtitling aspects related to expressions that are closely associated with the Korean culture and unfamiliar to the Brazilian culture with an emphasis on the subtitling of the K-drama Reply 1988 (2016) to Portuguese. The aim of the research was to compare the translation techniques adopted in professional and amateur subtitling, identifying tendencies toward the conservation or substitution of CSIs present in the first two episodes of the K-drama Reply 1988 (2016). The theoretical and methodological framework for defining and delimiting tendencies toward conservation and substitution is based on Aixelá (1996), who defines such culturally bound expressions as Culture-Specific Items (CSIs), and on Espindola (2005) for the thematic categorization of these expressions. The study is predominantly qualitative, supported by quantitative data. A total of 686 occurrences of CSIs were analyzed. The quantitative results indicated that both, fan subtitling and professional subtitling, showed a tendency toward the conservation of CSIs, albeit to different degrees. Fan subtitling, represented by the Viki platform, conserved 71.87% of the occurrences, whereas professional subtitling, represented by Netflix, conserved 53.06%. The qualitative analysis revealed that strategies, such as extratextual gloss, were employed exclusively in fan subtitling and were not identified in professional subtitling. This finding suggests that although professional subtitling has shown similarities compared to amateur subtitling, especially in regard to the conservation of CSIs, it still shows resistance to adopting translation strategies typically associated with fansubbing practices. Furthermore, the results by thematic category demonstrated that, in the translation of expressions related to cuisine and to dialectal expressions, interjections, and insults, substitution was the predominant strategy adopted. We concluded that the tendency toward the conservation or substitution of CSIs is not related solely to the nature of the translation, whether fan or professional, but also to platform conventions, the target audience, and the thematic category of the CSIs analyzed.

  • This research was developed within the line of Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (POSTRAD/UnB). The object of study focused on the conceptual terms essential for understanding and filling out the Income Tax Return (IR), targeting Deaf individuals, translators, interpreters, and other stakeholders in the field. The general objective was to collect, record, and organize term-signs in a bilingual glossary related to Accounting Sciences, with emphasis on the Income Tax Return. The specific objectives were: (i) to establish specific aspects of Portuguese–Libras translation in specialized texts; (ii) to investigate existing research on term-signs, with a focus on Terminology and Translation; (iii) to analyze the organization of bilingual lexicographic works (Libras/Portuguese); (iv) to identify the process of translating entries between Libras and Portuguese; and (v) to elaborate a bilingual glossary of Accounting Sciences, highlighting the specificities of the translation process in sign language. The research addressed topics such as lexicon and terminology from the perspective of the Brazilian Deaf community, strategies for communicating financial concepts to Deaf people, financial education from this perspective, silenced financial challenges, access to information and tax education for Deaf individuals, as well as the impact of the IRPF on the household economy of the Deaf population. Interdisciplinary perspectives on tax education and social inclusion were also considered. The methodological path was structured in six stages. The first involved data collection and definition of the target audience. The second, called Term-Sign Recording, encompassed the selection of signs and a bibliographic review of the concepts. The third stage focused on the organization of term-signs, with the production of photos, videos, and editing carried out at the Núcleo Varlibras Laboratory. In the fourth stage, translation and digital dissemination were undertaken, with the videos uploaded to YouTube and linked to the bilingual glossary through QR codes. The fifth stage corresponded to the definition of the macrostructure of the glossary, and the sixth to the organization of the microstructure. As a result, 30 terms were selected, prioritizing the translation of accounting concepts into Libras, in line with the sociocultural practices of the Deaf community. This ensured that the content was accessible and culturally appropriate, thus promoting understanding and the exercise of citizenship in the context of the Income Tax Return.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Despite its relevance within the canon of the French cultural and literary system, Georges Perec’s work, in the Portuguese language system and other languages, may have been seen as elitist, due to its experimental texts, or rather, the potentials of post-vanguardists, such as the memorabilia Je me souviens: Les choses communes I. By proposing the translation into Brazilian Portuguese titled Me Lembro: As coisas comuns I, some strategies are considered to capture the essence of his reminiscences, as well as to transmit the nostalgic and fragmented atmosphere of the original. Some processes are used to familiarize the reader with the peculiarities of the writing, while, at the same time, unveiling the Oulipian contraintes: thereby, a journey through Perec’s 480 memories is made possible. To study the process of this translation, it is particularly employed the concepts of rhizome, cartography, and assemblage, presented by the French Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in their work A Thousand Plateaus, as a possible method of mapping the chosen route. It is understood that translation can be seen as a rhizome because it involves the decentralized interconnection of different elements, the multiplicity of possible paths and interpretations, and the creation of a complex fabric of meanings. From this perspective, cartography can be employed to comprehend the dynamic and non-linear nature of translation, and in this research, the process of assemblage, the translation process carried out. In this conceptual map, which represents the different dimensions and relationships involved in the translation process: the assemblages of translation is identified in the location of the elements and actors involved in the translation process; rhizomes and lines of escape are mapped in the translation through the schematization of relations and connections between flows of meaning, cultural influences, and interactions between terms of the source and target languages; multiplicities are explored based on the different singularities and becomings present in the translation; deviations and ruptures are analyzed by scrutinizing the adaptations and choices made; and territories are contextualized through the examination of historical, social, and political factors that may influence the translation process and the results of the translation-product. In short, a critical analysis of the translation is carried out through a cartographic journey.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This work presents a comparative analysis of two translations of Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas into English published in 2020, by Margaret Jull Costa e Robin Peterson, from the United Kingdom, and Flora Thomson-DeVeaux, from the United States. The analysis focus on polysemic and cultural aspects found in the machadian narrative that can reveal the purpose and the project of each translation, as well the dynamic between the cultures of Brazil, United Sates, and United Kingdom in the literary system, given that polysemy and cultural marks in language generate complexity for the translation process, which is interesting for understanding how translation and the literary system work. The theorical framework used for the analysis was developed by José Lambert and Hendrik van Gorp (1985), offering a descriptive and multidisciplinary approach and conceiving translation as a social-linguistic phenomenon. Other authors, such as Válmi Hatje Faggion (2001, 2009), Itamar Even-Zohar, (1990), Gideon Toury (2012), Susan Bassnett (2002, 1999), Lawrence Venuti (1998), David Katan (1999), Haroldo de Campos (2006) e Roberto Schwarz (2007, 2008), contributed to the foundation of this work with their ideas about translation, translator, literary system, and machadian literature.

  • This research intended to approach, through a case study, the sociolinguistic assistance provided to immigrants and refugees who are not fluent in Portuguese in the contexts of health and education at the Paranoá region, Federal District, and to reflect on how Translations Studies and Interpretation can be useful in the linguistic reception of this population. The purpose of this dissertation is to characterize the trajectory of arrival and reception of this population in the Federal District and, consequently their integration into public services, more specifically, on health care and education. The methodology used was the collection of quantitative data from government institutions and qualitative data obtained through field observation and semi-structured interviews in three dimensions: the first, containing a brief overview of migration in Brazil and the Federal District, focusing on the Paranoá region; the second consists of presenting more specifically the Paranoá region, where the research was carried out, and the venues where the reception of immigrants and refugees was observed: the Basic Health Unit - UBS 01 and the Café sem Troco School; the third includes the results obtained from the interviews analysis. In the results of the investigation, it was possible to visualize how sociolinguistic reception was given to nonPortuguese speaking migrants in the public institutions researched, aiming to contribute for in-depth research and to enable the replication of what was presented as positive in other public institutions of the Federal District.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Against the backdrop of the dialogue between translation and psychoanalysis, this study aimed to speculate on the Lacanian movement in Brazil through a critical analysis of The Seminar, thus placing us within the realm of translation. The initial premise was based on questioning the ramifications of a work whose publication process shifted from orality to establishment and then to displacement. What would be the silent implications and effects of these movements on Lacanian theory in Brazilian soil? The study aimed to think Jacques Lacan's teaching as a practice of the crossroads. We tried to think about Jacques Lacan's teaching by practicing the crossroads of his translations. Employing principles akin to Deleuze and Guattari cartographic       thought,      the                 research                   performed   the         movements     of       writing, subjectivizing the object of study. Thus, the dissertation was divided into four parts: firstly, it initiates a dialogue between translation and psychoanalysis to retrieve psychoanalytic concepts in Bermanian traductology, proposing that translation possesses the philosophical and epistemological apparatus to generate positive critiques and to think about other fields of knowledge in an extraterritorial manner; secondly, it contextualizes Jacques Lacan, his work, and some of the issues that permeate the subject; thirdly, it explores the in-between territory, articulating both translation and psychoanalysis as fields whose most fundamental characteristic is the capacity   to   connect          with different         spheres    of              knowledge,         while             also problematizing binary structures and colonial power relations; fourthly, it presents the narrative of the research process, addressing a turn that led the initial theme in new directions, culminating in Lélia Gonzalez's contributions to psychoanalysis.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Drag culture has experienced a global rise into mainstream culture over the last decade, partly due to the popularization of programs such as RuPaul’s Drag Race(2009 – present).  The widespread circulation of the program has contributed to the diffusion of characteristics of this culture to the general public and the translation has become a central point for the success of the show. The linguistic interaction on the reality show is characterized, amongst other things, by the presence of a specific lingo, known as camp talk, which Keith Harvey (1998) describes as a form of speech “associated with a whole range of homosexual identities”.  Facing the lack of reliable reference materials on the theme in the language pair “English ® Portuguese”, this study aimed to analyze the translation choices of the characteristic lexical items of camp talk in the subtitles made by Netflix. Our main goal was to observe, register, and analyze how Brazilian translators have been dealing with the lexical issues of this linguistic variant in the translation. To this end, Corpus Linguistics (CL) was used as a methodological tool. After building a parallel corpus with all the episodes of seasons 11 and 12, Untucked 11 and 12, and All Stars 5 and 6, we compared the subcorpus of the original English subtitles with a corpus of general English to highlight the keywords, through the program AntConc (ANTHONY, 2017). Amongst them, we concentrated on the ones which are typical of camp talk, based on Harvey’s (2001) and Passa’s (2021) analysis strategies. Their occurrences were analyzed in context, as well as their translations, with the help of the program AntPConc (ANTHONY, 2017). The data collected throughout the research resulted in the organization of a sample of a bilingual American English ® Brazilian Portuguese glossary of camp talk and allowed us to conclude, regarding the translation of camp talk, that: i) there is a divergence between the sociolect variant of Brazilian Portuguese (pajubá) and American English (camp talk), due to a series of historical and cultural differences; ii) it is possible to use translation strategies to maintain the camp aspect, as we have observed in some examples from the corpus, even though there is a scarcity of reliable reference materials; iii) it is important to introduce and expand the notion of camp as potentially plural in both languages, always attentive to their textual and dialectal variants, so that its description can be done in a better way.

  • Translation is an ancient art that arises from the need to establish a connection with people from other languages and cultures. However, translating is more than the traditional concept of transferring a sequence of words to another language. Translation depends on cultural factors, and it is undeniable that, during this process, some cultural aspects of the original work may end up being lost in order to achieve cultural localization. This research, through the analytical-descriptive method, aims to map and gather translation data from the Chinese TV series "The Untamed," in episodes 1, 5, 6, 7 and 17 translated by professionals on the Netflix platform and by fansubbers on the Viki platform, in order to identify the translation differences in the construction of the dialogues' meaning and to attempt to establish and hypothesize how and why these differences may occur, utilizing theoretical reflections on foreignization and localization and the translation strategies presented by Tomaszkiewicz (1993). The results indicate that while professional translators adhere more closely to the localization rules established by the hiring company, amateur translators delve into the cultural elements of the original language, even if they end up exceeding the predetermined characters on the screen. Finally, it is concluded that the translation method and equivalence choices used by both sides depend on external and intrinsic factors of the translator, as translation is a creative process, and we cannot erase the professional's life experience and how it affects the final product.

  • In the context of the internationalization process, by facilitating intercultural communication, fostering innovation and knowledge advancement, and also increasing institutional visibility, institutional translation is a necessary tool for higher education institutions. This study, which fits into the scope of translation studies in the institutional context, considering the globalization and internationalization processes, seeks to describe the structures and dynamics of institutional translation at the University of Brasília (UnB), presenting examples of university sections that develop activities which contribute to the internationalization process. UnB was chosen as the setting of this study due to its relevance in the Brazilian and international higher education system. To achieve the purpose, the study focused on the collection and analysis of primary and secondary data. The results reveal that institutional translation is a strategic practice for the university, resulting from a collective effort among its sections, and requires governance and structuring to optimize intercultural communication and to achieve the goals of the university's internationalization process. Moreover, there is an urgent need for the adoption of structured policies by UnB, with a focus on translation, that consider the entire cultural and linguistic diversity present in the institution, as well as greater investment in specialized human resources.

  • The National High School Exam (ENEM) is a test aimed at students, both deaf and hearing, who have already finished high school and, with the grade obtained in the exam, they may enroll in undergraduate courses in Brazilian and foreign institutions. The ENEM, being an evaluation available all over Brazil, and which i salso aimed at deaf candidates, is a field of work for deaf translators, accompanying and translating the questions in the test, with the intention of transposing the exam into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in the most natural way possible. Therefore, this study aims at identifying and analyzing the education and training of deaf translators involved in the translation of ENEM, from 2017 to 2021, using information gathered from the Lattes Platform. This study not Only fills a gap in the Studies of Translation and Interpretation of Sign Language, but also has practical implications and developments for the education and training of these professionals. It highlights the importance of expanding the presence of deaf translators not only in universities, but also in secretaries of education, especially in the initial grades. This would guarantee that deaf students have access to deaf translators early on, facilitating their process of learning and inclusion. The results show hat the presence of deaf translators during the ENEM is an established practice, but still little documented. The education and training of these translators varies, not being specific to translation courses, but possessing wide experience with sign languages and in translation practice. Their competences and skills, such as their mastery of Libras, are essential to guarantee the accessibility of ENEM video-tests for deaf candidates.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The subject of this dissertation is the retranslation into French of a text that I had already translated in my Final Project for a Bachelor's Degree in French Translation, defended in 2021. These are the first two chapters of the book Primavera para Rosas Negras (Spring for Black Roses), a collection of essays by the black Brazilian writer Lélia Gonzalez, published in 2018 by Filhos da África. The general aim of this work is to produce a retranslation of these texts, based on a critical and comparative analysis of my own translation strategies at the two moments and based on intellectual and political distancing and maturing. This process of retranslation is an exercise in linguistic but also political and ethical updating. The challenges of this translation and its retranslation are shaped by the feminist context of the time when Lélia Gonzalez wrote, in the 1970s, placed in perspective with the present day, when I am translating. Lélia was active in the midst of the military dictatorship, when the anti-racist issue was changing face, with the idea of "racial democracy". Her work sought to enlighten the black population about their disadvantaged position in society, in order to contribute to the constitution of the political subject of the anti-racist struggle. This process of translating and retranslating Lélia Gonzalez was marked by the question of the past: how am I, a white Franco-Brazilian translator, supposed to translate a text by a black activist into French today, bearing in mind the place of speech and privilege of whiteness in Brazilian society and the place authorised for black people? Another central issue of the work is the process of retranslation itself: producing a new translation of a text that I had already translated brought up reflections on the updated relationship with the source text and the author, but also on the relationship with my first translation and with myself. In order to address these questions, I used a critical theory of translation and retranslation as a basis, with an emphasis on the decolonial perspective, which inaugurates the critique of Eurocentrism in the social sciences and Western feminism. At the end of this process, I have come to a conclusion: in addition to political issues, questions have emerged regarding the writing of translation as an ethical and aesthetic relationship. Although I chose to translate a Brazilian work emblematic of the reality of a black woman in Brazil into French in order to broaden its access to other linguistic communities, my translation and retranslation inevitably manifested themselves in my own words, sometimes empathetically, sometimes violently.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The video game industry has become the most lucrative sector in global entertainment, surpassing cinema, music, and streaming (Bernal-Merino, 2014, p.125). In 2024, the global games market is expected to exceed $219 billion, with Brazil standing out as the largest market in Latin America and the tenth in the global ranking, with over 100 million gamers. However, accessibility in video games is still limited. Approximately 9.9% of gamers have disabilities and face significant barriers. Despite advancements such as expanded subtitles and audiogames, few titles offer adequate accessibility options. This dissertation investigates accessibility in video games with a focus on deaf people, hard of hearing, or functionally diverse individuals. The goal is to analyze and propose improvements in the linguistic accessibility of video games, using the computer game "Project Zomboid" as a case study. The research aims to determine whether the resource of easy-to-read subtitles in video games would significantly contribute to accessibility, especially for the deaf, people with hearing loss, or those with language limitations, and whether modding could enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The adopted methodology includes a qualitative and exploratory approach. A bibliographic review on disability, deafness, audiovisual accessibility, and modding was conducted. The study involved interlingual and intralingual translations, as well as practical application of easy-to-read subtitles and visual resources in the chosen game. The results show that the inclusion of easy-to-read subtitles and visual resources in the game "Project Zomboid" improved accessibility without compromising the experience for gamers without disabilities. The research confirms the feasibility and benefits of adaptations for including people with disabilities. Modifications made through modding serve as a model for future accessibility initiatives in games. The research highlights the relevance of audiovisual translation, particularly easy-to-read subtitles, to ensure effective accessibility for people with disabilities in the gaming sector. It is hoped that this work will inspire further studies and contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and accessible gaming environment.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This work was developed within the Translation research scope and Sociodiscursive Practices of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (POSTRAD/UnB). Its object of study is the terms of the content of Defensive Driving (DD), one of the theoretical requirements for obtaining the National Driver's License (CNH), aiming at the suggestion of a bilingual glossary in the Portuguese Language and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) pair. The target audience is candidates for Deaf drivers, as well as translators, interpreters, teachers, and other interested people in the area. The specific objectives of the research lie in: i) carrying out a bibliographical research on the Traffic Legislation in order to trace the trajectory of the Deaf citizen's right to drive; ii) survey how information is presented on the Brazilian Traffic Departments websites , seeking accessibility for the Deaf public, and whether there is bilingual material to promote access; and iii) highlight the process stages for obtaining a driver's license in the Federal District (DF) focusing on the theoretical-technical course content, demonstrating the importance of DD in everyday traffic. The theoretical foundation was divided into five topics, which address: translation and the Brazilian Sign Language: a look of struggle!; Translation Studies and Terminology: historical aspects; Libras Terminology: brief postgraduate research; bilingual glossary: concept and structure of a terminographic work focused on Libras; Corpus Linguistics (CL) as a facilitator and ratifier in the extraction of terms. The methodological path that defines the scope of the glossary was divided into four stages: i) identification of the object of study and target audience; ii) selection of terms in Portuguese based on the LC using the AntConc tool; iii) informants selection, through the application of questionnaires with DETRAN's and qualified Deaf people, in addition to identifying terms in media materials; and iv) preparation and organization of terminology sheets (FT) in Portuguese and Libras. In response to the collection, 145 candidate terms were located, and 10 terms were selected to suggest a pilot project macro and microstructure for a bilingual glossary. This research does not address the creation of term signals. These term-signals come from the informants. This study is part of a project that is underway at DETRAN/DF called “Libras no Trânsito”. It is expected that this proposal will provide support for the preparation of teaching materials suitable for the Deaf public. Thus, we highlight the importance of using visual resources in Libras and written Portuguese as a second language, to promote the effective training of this driver. Finally, improvements are sought for the Deaf linguistic accessibility in the environment of the Department of Transit of the Federal District, in addition to encouraging new research in the area.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the implementation of linguistic accessibility in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) at the Juscelino Kubistchek Memorial (JK), located in Brasília - DF. Recently, the Memorial has adopted as one of its mottos: “Modernity and Accessibility”. For this, the work begins with a review of the main laws that support the linguistic and educational rights of the Deaf community, making it possible to understand the civil importance of the proposed theme, especially dealing with the theme of public and educational policies (first chapter) . Followed by a rigorous conceptual and historical assessment of linguistic accessibility in general and then specifically in museums (second chapter). This second has two central points: the first, to present the concept of accessibility, converging, then, to linguistic accessibility; and the second, presenting the importance of linguistic accessibility in museums and then, converging on the JK Memorial. In the third chapter, it is verified how the space of the Memorial has treated the translation in Libras. Here, we have two central contributions to the work: the first, deals with an in-depth study of the technical criteria for translation into Libras, especially with regard to Libras windows; and the second, the application of questionnaires to Deaf volunteers and the investigation, in loco, regarding the translation mechanisms used and their quality within the Memorial. As a result, it could be concluded that in the technological part the Museum is partially adequate, however it lacks in the face-to-face service in Libras. In this final chapter, the questionnaires are applied and the on-site investigation is carried out for conclusions regarding the current situation of the JK Museum. The work ends with the presentation of the final considerations, where the contributions are expressed, in addition to suggesting proposals for adapting the Memorial, so that it can achieve the objectives of the motto adopted by it.

  • This work is part of the research line Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, developed in the Postgraduate Program in Translation Studies - POSTRAD and in the Laboratory of Technology for the Studies of Translation and Interpretation of Sign Languages in Brazil and the World - LabTecTrad. The object of study is Automatic Translators. The general objective is to analyze the translation processes carried by Automatic Translators for Brazilian Sign Language - Portuguese. The target audience for this research are translators who use these technologies as work tools. Therefore, it has the following specific objectives: i) to present a brief history of machine translators that use the language pair sign language and Portuguese; ii) search for government sites and institutions that use automatic translators in Sign Language; iii) interview the group that study, organize and create automatic translators and find out how many deaf people participate in these teams and iv) investigate their strengths and weaknesses in the construction of meaning in PL. The main motivation for carrying out this research came after i’m joined as a professor at the Federal Institute of Brasília - IFB, where courses are offered in Initial and Continuing Training - FIC, Technical and Higher Undergraduate and Postgraduate. All courses are free and open to the community in general and the call uses automatic translators as a form of linguistic accessibility. As a way of understanding this functioning, it was necessary to adopt the methodological path of Tuxi (2017) where we initially made the following path: i. organize a translation project; collect translations from machine translators; analyze the translations made by them and propose a translation. As a result, it was possible from the contrast performed, to propose a translation that we present in the form of QRCode and that we believe that in the future it can be inserted in the website of the Federal Institute of Brasília - IFB. This work joins the others in the field of Sign Language Translation Studies and hopes to reinforce the area.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research is based on the need for translations into Libras so that the Deaf can clearly understand what is being translated, specifically with regard to translations of literary works. Knowing the great difficulty in relation to the translation of literary texts due to the language rich in idiomatic expressions and metaphors. This situation happens mainly due to the difficulty that some translators face in translating such works, remembering that the target audience understands the world through visuals. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to analyze a literary work translated into Libras and to make notes of the passages in which the use of Classifiers would contribute to a visual and clear translation. The work chosen is the book "The Little Prince" by the French author Antonie Exuperié, we chose a work translated into Libras carried out by the Accessibility in Public Libraries (ABP) project of the Brazilian federal government. The aim of this study is to identify the classifiers used in translation, expand and disseminate the use of classifiers, awakening and encouraging interpreters to use classifiers in their translations. The approach chosen for the work was qualitative, since it is intended to better understand the problem and seek solutions for it. The target audience of the research focuses on hearing and Deaf translators and interpreters. Based on this need, the translation process was organized into videos; the creation of the sign for the character Pequeno Príncipe, palpated using a classifier and the other characters based on studies previously carried out on the work. With the work we noticed that there is a great difficulty on the part of the translators in using classifiers in the translations, even in the passages that allow the use, some translators choose to use signs or translation close to Portuguese. We hope that this research will contribute to future translations and research related to literary translations into Libras.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The constant changes in human migration flows bring to the forefront of discussion how to safeguard fundamental rights enshrined in international treaties and domestic legislations, such as an individual's linguistic rights. Such a right aims to ensure that people with little or no proficiency in a country's official language can access essential services through professional interpreting provided by a "community interpreter". Among those who are prevented from accessing social services due to little language proficiency are the refugees who, apart from being particularly vulnerable, are unable to communicate with service providers because they speak a language other than that spoken by the agencies whose services they seek. Faced with such a challenge, it is necessary to implement language assistance policies that could be translated into an integrated interpreter's training, certification, and accreditation system. Even though few countries provide specialized interpreting training, most of those that do have some type of training framework depend on manuals and ethical codes written without due consideration of linguistic studies or specialized reflections on the nature of translation and interpretation. Against such a backdrop, this research aims to look into some of such materials-manuals, guides, and codes of ethics - written in English, in order to identify how language, translation, and interpretation concepts are understood and portrayed. Based on the results derived from such a linguistic analysis, we aimed at reflecting on the training of community interpreters in refugee and migration contexts. In order to understand how interpreter-mediated interactions unfold, we adopted the theoretical and methodological framework of Interactional Sociolinguistics, which focus on the verbal interaction dynamics and on the agency of all participants, including that of the mediators themselves. The data were collected and analyzed drawing on corpus-based discourse analysis concepts, which enabled us to identify idealized and impractical understandings of the translation activity and the interpreter's role. Such understandings were linguistically translated into the use of words, among others, such as "neutrality", "impartiality" and "accuracy". Even though some of the materials were written in countries that have a history of hosting immigrants and of implementing language assistance services, they convey limited and essentialist concepts of the translation activity, taking it to be a transparent and invisible procedure. Against such concepts, we propose a preliminary reflection of interpreter training based on the dialogical and situated interaction and on the interpreter's agency, a protagonist of undeniably imbalanced human interactions.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Audio description is a modality of audiovisual translation that provides accessibility to visual content. One of the practices in audio description is interlingual translation of audio description scripts. However, when one transfers a script from one culture to another, it is not only the language that is considered. There are nationwide guides that have different guidelines on how to make an audio description that meets the expectations of the target audience. Students who study audiovisual translation often find it difficult to justify their audio description choices. In this dissertation, we propose activities based on norms, functionalist theories, and practical analysis that collaborate with assertiveness in scripts. To research on the implications of these differences and to create a material that assists the beginner audio describer, the present work proposes to compare, from a functionalist approach of Translation Studies, two versions of English (from the United States) audio description scripts of the film Yesterday (2019): one originally made for the streaming platform Amazon and the other translated from a previous script in Spanish within the framework of an audio description workshop and that is available in the catalog of the Audesc app. For the analysis, we will use the source text analysis model proposed by Mazur (2020) and Bardini's (2020) classification of audio description techniques. We intend to identify the differences between the two scripts and infer if these differences are related to the standards of audio description that guided them to create didactic units that assist the audio descriptor to make his translational decisions understanding the intersectionality between the standards and the AD.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research, in the field of Translation Studies, is based on Walter Benjamin’s work, especially regarding his thoughts expressed in “The Translator’s Task”, to examine the interface between Translation and Law, shedding light on the significance of translators in the exchange of ideas from one country to another, i.e., in the task of transforming cultures and languages, not carrying messages. As experience should occur ahead of theories (MESCHONNIC, 2010), the starting point of this research was a translation, from English into Portuguese, of the original (BENJAMIN, 2008): the lead opinion of the majority written by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch in the Ramos v. Louisiana case, argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in 2020. In that opportunity, the Court adopted a meaningful rationale by discussing the possibility of overturning the Apodaca v. Oregon precedent and explaining the racist origins of Louisiana’s and Oregon’s laws. As a result, it ruled that the US Constitution requires unanimous verdicts to convict defendants of serious offenses. Given that, there are some pragmatic reasons why the original could lead to a transformation – in accordance with Walter Benjamin, his followers and their shared epistemology – in the target culture. First, it highlights the complementarity in languages (BENJAMIN, 2008), as this research revealed a possible enrichment of the Portuguese language in the process of language relations. Second, it lays down the unanimity requirement, an important concept to the Brazilian rules of criminal procedure once jurors recover their legal right to openly deliberate within a jury trial. Third, it goes back in history to the roots of Oregon’s and Louisiana’s laws, which could foster social awareness on the issue of racism in Brazil. The findings of this research indicate that by accepting strangeness, rather than erasing it, the opinion delivered by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch in the source culture could eventually transform the Brazilian context, not only in terms of the country’s language, but also concerning its culture, which goes beyond the legal area.

  • Based on the problem that literary works translation occasionally face negative reception due to criticism from not specialized agents in translation, and based on the perception that translation criticism and literary criticism influence directly the dissemination and reception of literature translation, this research aims to delve into the concepts of reception and translation criticism, seeking to investigate their influence on the translation market of literary works, specifically in the works of Clarice Lispector, grounded on the notions of Berman's critique (1995) and Toury’s norm (1995). Based on the outline of an analytical trajectory for translation criticism, proposed by Antoine Berman (1995), consisting of six stages, this case study intends, through the critical and comparative analysis of the short stories Felicidade Clandestina, Restos do Carnaval and Cem Anos de Perdão by Clarice Lispector (1920-1977), published in the book Felicidade Clandestina (1971, 1998), the English translations of Torture and Glory, The Remnants Of Carnival and A Hundred Years' Pardon by Giovanni Pontiero published in the book Selected Crônicas (1996) and the English translations Covert Joy, Remnants of Carnival and One Hundred Years of Forgiveness, by Katrina Dodson published in the book The Complete Stories (2018), to analyze the translations published in 1996 and 2018, seeking to investigate which strategies are most used by translators in the translation of Lispector's short stories, observing how they are received in the target language. In addition, based on evidence that the translations of Lispector's works into English facilitated the entry of Clarice's literature into other countries, and in order to address the scope of translations of Clarice's works into languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin and Dutch, this research aims to develop a brief overview of the internationalization of Clarice's literature. The aim is, therefore, to contribute to the discussion of ideas about literary translation criticism and, more specifically, about the criticism and reception of Clarice's works in translation, based on the investigation of Lispector's translations dissemination and their internationalization for Englishspeaking and other cultures.

  • This research was developed in the research line Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies – POSTRAD at the University of Brasília. The object of study are the signals used in sporting events such as Deaflympics events. In this sense, this work has the general objective of organizing a multilingual glossary as a tool for deaf translators and interpreters who work in sporting events such as Deaflympics. To achieve this objective, we proposed the following specific objectives: i. Investigate the role of translator and interpreter of Libras and IntSL (intramodal and interlingual interpretation) in Brazil and in the international context at the Deaflympics 2022 event; ii. Describe the history of national and international deaf sport over time until reaching the Deaflympics 2022 and iii. Identify the way of registering Terminologies in a multilingual glossary through international and national research on sporting events. As a theoretical basis, we used for research on translators and interpreters for deaf and non-deaf people: Pinheiro (2022), Granado (2019) and Nogueira (2016), specific in the areas of study of translation and interpretation, knowledge about simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, intramodal and intermodal, on theorists of Libras and International Sign Language (IntSL), thermology and glossary for sporting events. The methodological proposal follows the model of Tuxi (2017), that is, it presents a macrostructure and microstructure of the term signs based on the organization of terminological sheets in English, IntSL, Portuguese, Libras and Illustration, with specialization of the term signs used in the 24th Deaflympics. In the current glossary there are a total of 21 signs of sports and 85 signs of services, in addition to including videos of the use of QR codes as a tool in the multilingual Glossary of term signs by Deaflympics

  • Writing and translating texts for defence of territories are ancient activities. Within the scope of the Brazilian Armed Forces, the translation of military texts was intensified with the participation of Brazilian troops in peacekeeping missions of the United Nations, in particular, the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti. This study, inserted in the disciplinary field of Translation Studies, in its theoretical, descriptive, product-oriented branch, has the general objective of describing and analyzing the translation into Spanish of the Brazilian Defence White Paper. Specifically, the aim is to: (i) map the translation units based on the Brazilian Defence White Paper and its translation into Spanish; (ii) identify military terms in Portuguese and Spanish, based on frequency of use, used in the area of National Defence in the corpus; and (iii) examine whether the translation of the Brazilian Defence White Paper into Spanish uses terminology similar to that found in white papers originally written in Spanish. For this purpose, a corpus composed of three subcorpora was compiled, namely: (i) the Brazilian Defence White Paper (LBr); (ii) a translation of the LBr into Spanish; and (iii) the Libros Blancos de Defensa, produced by Spanishspeaking countries (LEsp), published in the last decade of the 1900s and in the first decade of the 2000s. This work is mainly based on Descriptive Translation Studies (i.e. Toury, 1995; Pym, 2017), in the concepts of domain knowledge (i.e. Scardamalia; Bereiter, 1991) and Translation Units (i.e. Alves, 2000; Hurtado Albir, 2007), as well as in Corpus-Based Translation Studies. The quantitative results point to the existence of an asymmetry with regard to the frequency of use of some terms in the source text and in the target text. It also presents a discrepancy regarding the total number of items and forms of both texts. This discrepancy is related, among others, to the structural differences between the two languages and possible imbalances of a translational nature

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This master's dissertation aims to analyze the development of translation competence, more specifically the thematic ability/terminological knowledge of translation learners in the Bachelor of Letters in English Translation at the University of Brasilia. Therefore, our proposal is to evaluate the text of the students of English-Portuguese Translation Practice: Technical and Scientific Texts, and the application of a questionnaire and a translation activity and use the mentioned text of the students to compose collecting data for analysis. The research aims to guide students to make proper use of terminology tools, thinking about their relevance, expectations and challenges in understanding and translating texts, using strategies to solve problems and support tools. The work is also concerned to demonstrate how the translation activity, mediated by the professor, can be favorable to the development of criticism and new translation practices, realizing that the use of terminological tools are important resources that help the translator to carry out his tasks with ease, more efficiency, agility, and confidence, using the target language clearly and precisely. The research makes it possible to identify the difficulties faced by the students in matters related to the textual production of specialized knowledge and makes it possible to analyze the positive and negative points, regarding the methodology used in the classroom in the textual production and allows changing methods to solve negative points and the production of other actions to improve the conduct of discipline. The dissertation used the quali-quantitative method to analyze the texts of a group of students of bachelor of Translation English course at the University of Brasilia. The students were invited to take part in the research by carrying out a translation activity and answering a questionnaire with questions on the following subjects: 1) How do you evaluate the choice of the text presented in terms of the subject and the textual genre of the report 2) How do you evaluate its methodology, 3) What were the challenges and difficulties during the translation of the presented text 4) What were the expectations when identifying and learning new translation strategies, 5) What strategies were used to prepare the target text. The proposal was to present the work to the students and explain the translation activity, presenting some free support platforms to assist in the activity. Students were instructed to translate the first five pages of the text Valuing Water, made available by UNESCO. The activity was evaluated and was mandatory. The chosen activity made it possible to assess the translation capacity of each student, realizing the adaptation skills needed to perform the task. Research participants were guaranteed anonymity in their responses. This dissertation consists in introduction, which presents the theme, objectives, and justification of this investigation. In chapter 1, we describe how teaching and learning process works. In chapter 2, we discuss the concepts of technical and scientific translation, the role of the technical and scientific translator, the translator and the use of technological resources, and the relationship between translation and terminology. In Chapter 3, we present the methodology for applying the Didactic Unit and in Chapter 4, we analyze the collected data and discuss the research results. Finally, we present the final considerations and bibliographical references.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • One Piece has become the best-selling manga in history, with several translations around the world. In Brazil, it has received different translations in its comic book version as well as in its animated version. Although they both come from the same source and have very similar scripts in the original language (the Japanese language), both versions that are available today have distinct translations: the manga respects the standardized written language more and avoids the constant use of slangs, while the anime makes use of these slangs to try and bring the translation closer to the Brazilian audience and make it sound more natural. This paper aims to carry out a comparative analysis between the most recent translations of the One Piece manga and anime to investigate the reasons that led to the differences between them, identifying the strategies the translators possibly used (Aubert, 1998), and how they deal with the linguistic and sociocultural differences of the Japanese language and culture when translated into Portuguese. To do that, we explore concepts of the Japanese language, such as the structure of the language and the usage of onomatopoeias (Shibatani, 2009; Frellesvig, 2018; Wakabayashi, 2021), we trace the development of anime and manga in Japan and the reasons for their international acclaim (Luyten, 2000; Schodt, 1983; Napier, 2005), we address the language of comic books, especially that particular of manga (Nakagawa, 2016; Ramos, 2018; Perides, 2018), and the obstacles that appear when it is translated (Leitão, 2020; Pimentel, 2018), and we investigate concepts of audiovisual translation in the context of dubbing (Franco; Araújo, 2011; Cézar; Immediato, 2017; Chaume, 2001), and slangs (Preti, 2007; Santos, 2014). The analysis was conducted through an established set of episodes from each season of the anime, from which we took fragments where the translation presented slangs, and afterwards compared these fragments with their equivalent in the manga. We were able to identify the usage of the translation strategies modulation and adaptation in the dubbed translation, which had a much larger number of slangs than the manga and in different contexts, whether to insert informal elements in the translation, to make the Brazilian audience feel closer to the anime through identification, or to create a type of characterization to a specific character, while the translation in the manga tends to be more literal and closer to the original text conceived by the author. Furthermore, we noticed that both texts make an effort to somehow insert elements from the Japanese culture, such as honorific titles, in their translation.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The theme of this dissertation falls within the line of research Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, developed in the Translation Studies Program - POSTRAD, at the University of Brasília. The object of study are the terms and term signs from the area of History used in bilingual assessment processes (Portuguese-Libras), with the aim of proposing a bilingual glossary of the Portuguese – Libras language pair. To this end, we have the following specific objectives: i. describe the teaching of History to the Deaf; ii. identify the processes and theories used to organize glossaries in sign language and iii. Analyze how the term signs are registered in translation based on semantic studies. To achieve the objectives, the methodological path collected terms and term signs from the ENEM tests (National High School Exam) and the bilingual entrance exams at UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), both from the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, both in written Portuguese and in Libras through Videoproof. Thus, starting from the search for the most used terms in the Portuguese test, we looked for the term signs translated in the Libras video tests. To catalog the most frequent terms and term signs in the database (written tests and Video tests), an inventory of the lexicon of the History area was created using knowledge and experience as a bilingual teacher, manually. We used resources that corpus linguistics offers, such as the Antconc program, with terms in Portuguese, to provide a basis and security in the survey. The entire work was theoretically based on the Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT) by Maria Tereza Cabré (1995) and also Socioterminology based on Faulstich (2006). The analysis of terms and term signs in the History area sought the principles of bilingual Terminology (TUXI, 2017) for better conceptualization and clarity when translating this linguistic pair (Portuguese/Libras), as well as in bilingual History teaching ( with an educational interpreter or bilingual teacher), examining some linguistic variations and lexical ambiguities found in the research. Finally, using the terms and term signs collected, a bilingual Portuguese/Libras de História glossary was created, launched on an online platform (website: https://glossariohistoria-libras.fly.dev/), with the aim of and as specific objectives of providing new information, generating and producing knowledge that brings improvements to the area of translation and teaching sign language.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation is part of translation studies, in the line of research Translation and sociodiscursive practices, and its objective is to propose a Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Libras and Portuguese). The methodological procedure involved searching for signs in the health area already used by the Deaf community, based on the Ministry of Health's Glossary Saúde de A a Z (Health from A to Z), published on the ministry's website, which contains the main themes, actions, public policies and programs of the Ministry of Health in the prevention and promotion of health in Brazil. In the absence of terms on this website, other legal means were also used, such as the Virtual Health Library, also run by the Ministry of Health. As a product of this research, the proposal was to register a bilingual lexicon (Libras/Portuguese) of instrumental vocabularies from the health area in Libras. Health is everyone's right and the duty of the state, guaranteed through social and economic policies aimed at reducing the risk of disease and other illnesses and universal and equal access to actions and services for its promotion, protection and recovery. From this perspective, the Deaf community has the right to access health through their communication channel, in this case the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras. That's why this dissertation is of great importance, as it could promote the expansion of lexicons in a specific area, in this case Health in Libras, and promote the visibility of Libras.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aimed to publicize the importance of tactile Libras in the process of translating and interpreting country music to analyze the perception of Deafblind people. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, we had some lives by country singers and among these lives, the singer Marília Mendonca was a pioneer in providing the translation into Libras of her country songs through the presence of Libras Translators and Interpreters. Given this repercussion, we thought about what translation and interpretation into tactile Libras would be like to provide cultural accessibility for the Deafblind and we have the possibility of recording their perceptions. We observed that, despite some initiatives in country music, in relation to the translation process, Surdocego does not yet have effective accessibility in tactile Libras and, therefore, it is necessary to provide new research and more studies with translations in tactile Libras, so that the Deafblind Community has access to information from this form of communication. Therefore, we seek to disseminate tactile Libras in a technical way so that Deafblind people have access to country music, as well as linguistic accessibility and guaranteed access to culture and leisure. Furthermore, the work presents the different characteristics that we can find in the world of Deafblindness and increasingly provide cultural accessibility for this segment.

  • Although Dom Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, written in the 17th century, was quickly translated into many languages, the first authorial translation into European Portuguese, the Monumental Edition carried out by Cia Literária do Porto, only occurred in the 19th century. Monteiro Lobato based his Don Quixote das Crianças on it, in the early 20th century, bringing the character to the Brazilian children's universe. This work was translated twice into Buenos Aires Spanish. The main objective of this work is to reconstruct the paths and strategies used by authors/translators in the works that make up the corpus of this investigation. The research is structured into three blocks that address, firstly, the subsidies necessary for its complete understanding. Among them there are the theoretical subsidies from Translation Studies such as the Polysystem Theory, developed by Itamar Even-Zohar, and Descriptive Translation Studies, represented by Gideon Toury. Literary subsides are also included, introducing Miguel de Cervantes and Dom Quixote de la Mancha, as well as the Monumental Edition and its translators: Viscount of Castilho, Viscount of Azevedo and Pinheiro Chagas. The second block deals with the social and political contexts in which the work was written and translated, introducing the author, translator, and editor Monteiro Lobato, the work under study, as well as its translators into Buenos Aires Spanish: Benjamín de Garay and M. J. de Sosa. The third and final block uses the translation analysis outline developed by Antoine Berman, combined with the analysis and description model of translations created by Lambert and Van Gorp, with the aim of identifying the position occupied by the works that make up the corpus of the research in the Brazilian and Argentine literary systems in the early 20th century. Understanding Monteiro Lobato's literary and translational thinking, as well as his translators’ ones, and the context in which Children's Don Quixote was produced and translated aims to contribute to the history of translation in Brazil, understand the conception at the time of the translator's role and the role of translated literature in shaping of Brazilian and Argentine literary systems. Furthermore, it highlights the relevance of Monteiro Lobato, not only as an author but also as a translator, editor, and promoter of Brazilian literature abroad.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The imposition of the English language as norm of prestige during the British settling resulted in significant variations and changes in the English spoken in the colonized regions, originating new uses of the language. Therefore, the normative version was replaced by a discourse adapted to the places where the colonies had been established, as a recognition and appreciation of their own cultures and identities. The post-colonial literature emerged to question and deny concepts imposed by the imperial power, such as a standard linguistic code that should be privileged. One example of post-colonial literature is Kehinde (1994), written by the Nigerian writer Buchi Emecheta (1944-2017). This work intends to present a commented translation of Kehinde, investigate and answer which strategies of post-colonial literature are used by the author and how the linguistic and cultural aspects in the text could be translated. Thus, examples will be presented with excerpts from the translation compared to excerpts from the source text, with the aim of offering translation alternatives for Kehinde, in the Brazilian context. Furthermore, since post-colonial literature is not so translated, especially to Brazilian Portuguese, this work can contribute for future translations of postcolonial texts.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The theme of this dissertation is part of the research line of Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, developed in the Postgraduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (POSTRAD/UnB). The object of study are the Regulatory and Warning Traffic Signs that are taught the theoretical-technical course as a prerequisite for obtaining the National Driver's License (CNH), popularly called Driver's License, with the aim of translate into Brazilian Sign Language - Libras the meaning and definition of these signs that are used nationwide in the daily life of the Deaf driver. The target audience of this research are Deaf candidates who participate in the CNH acquisition process in the Federal District, or Deaf people already qualified, as well as Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (TILS), traffic teachers and others interested in this topic. . To achieve our objective, this research aims to: i) identify the structure of the Traffic Department of the Federal District (DETRAN/DF) for the Deaf to participate in the stages of the qualification process; ii) search for teaching materials in Sign Language to obtain a CNH in Brazil; identify the translation processes that involve intersemiotics into Sign Language. In order to achieve our objectives, we divided the methodological course into the following steps: i) Approach and nature of the research; ii) Definition of the objective, target audience and constitution of the corpus; iii) Collection of image material from the plates; iii) Organization and elaboration of terminology sheets supported by the methodology of Tuxi (2017), also using QR Code technology to view the videos, facilitating the interaction of the Deaf with the translation of the plates. Finally, we suggest a macro and microstructure of a glossary based on the terminographic sheets and the translation of items from the simulated theoretical test of DETRAN/DF, addressing the content of plates, as a way of validating the research carried out. We hope that this work will expand the Terminology research space in the Studies of Translation and Interpretation of Sign Languages, in addition to encouraging new discussions and deepening studies in DETRAN's for the creation of accessible teaching materials used in the formation of the Deaf conductor.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aims to analyze translation as an adaptation mechanism used by the American company Walt Disney in film versions of preexisting fairy tales, that is, to indicate the possible translation and adaptive strategies adopted by Disney. There is also the intention of highlighting the way in which psychosocial aspects have been addressed over the years by the company, considering that the target audience of the versions adapted into animated feature films is, in general, a child audience. Data indicates that, despite the numerous similarities between translations and film adaptations, the translated texts present differences and particularities when the intended audiences and the participants involved in the translation process are taken into account. In this way, it is possible to include the psychosocial aspects that Disney might be interested in exploring at a given socio-historical-cultural moment. For that, four translations and adaptations of fairy tales of European origin were selected, from the 18th century, originally in German and French: Snow White (1869); Cinderella (1968); The Princess and the Frog (The Frog King) (1869); Rapunzel (1698). These tales were translated and adapted into animated feature films and produced by the Walt Disney Company, in American English, with the following correspondent titles: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937); Cinderella (1950, 2001, and 2015); The Princess and the Frog (2009); Tangled (2010). It should be considered, in this analysis, that fairy tales are defined in a very extended textual genre, that allows infinite mutations in storytelling, and that, at the same time, is subject to rewritings, translations and adaptations in a number of different contexts, such as literature, media and other systems. Therefore, characteristics of children's literature will be considered as well as traits of the literary genre defined by Novaes Coelho, Tatar, Propp, Dalton and Bettelheim, in addition to translation issues raised by Meschonnic, Laplantine, Derrida, Peirce, Santaella, and others, also creation and adaptation issues proposed by Haroldo de Campos and Linda Hutcheon, among other agents of valuable contributions.

  • The present research presents a translation of a chapter extracted from the novel Humus, published in 2006, by the novelist Fabienne Kanor. In view of the author's work, which is still little read and its translation in the French language degree courses, this dissertation was outlined from the presentation of a novelist novel. We start from the understanding that the process of translation, mainly of black literary texts, black thought, black essay texts by Guellwar Adún requires more than rhetorical eloquence and/or technical acuity. Request a write-up. Therefore, we chose to be guided by the writer and essayist Conceição Evaristo's notion of writing, for aligning with our demands and ours. As de Carrascosa (2017), Édouard Glissant (2021), Paul Gilroy (2001), Souza (2018), Souza (2017), Silva-Reis; Araujo (2017), Vanessa Massoni (2020) were fundamental to

add discussions to our translation. In addition, we start from a black epistemology and methodology and a place of black, decolonial and anti-racist enunciation for the translation of this narrative of black authorship. Finally, it was possible to write literary works of French expression and this reverberates in the African-American.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aims to present the translation strategies for the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras of the short story "Sítio do Picapau Amarelo" by the writer of Brazilian Literature - Monteiro Lobato. The objective is to contribute to the formation of deaf translators, through the dissemination of the translation strategy of the process of signs-name of the characters and especially in the translation of the genre Tale. The theory, field research and selection of the
target audience, represents the basis for the development of a research that seeks to record the translation strategies of Libras. The concepts and explanations around the name sign of the characters are presented in Libras, through Translation sheets. The images concerning the name signs appear in a photographic collection, which allows access in digital media, in computer networks and through the QR-Code system. The expansion of the Lexicon of Libras seeks to contribute and request access to information in Libras, as well as new research on name signs of
characters in Libras, in the specific case of the short story "Sítio do Picapau Amarelo" by the writer Monteiro Lobato, making access to literary translations by the Deaf of paramount importance.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The present work presents a theoretical study that aims to render problematic the concept of quality in translation in Juliane House. Its realization followed the principles of comparative conceptual research, centered on the comparison between the concept of quality used by Juliane House in her model of quality assessment in translation (HOUSE, 2015) and the precepts of the main concepts of quality practiced in the discipline Quality Management of the Administration Rank. The results obtained indicate that for House “quality means equivalence and equivalence means quality”. The concept of quality retained by the author is limited to the linguistic aspect of the translation, based on the concept of linguistic equivalence, focusing on the product and executed a posteriori, after the end of the translation process; these characteristics are fully opposed to the global, broad and anticipatory concept as practiced within the scope of the Quality Management discipline. The methodology followed was based on the comparative method and the analysis of concepts.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation aims to reflect upon the translation of linguistic diversity in the documentary film Catadores de História (2015), directed by Tânia Quaresma, and to propose a new translation for Latin American Spanish subtitling. Inscribed in the decolonial translation proposal (PRICE, 2015; MIGNOLO; SCHIWY, 2007), subtitles are seen as a political tool, and the objective is to maintain the discursive marks of the speech community of recyclable material collectors. The activist character of the film–to enhance the voice of a socially marginalized community–is taken into consideration and the speeches of the collectors and their orality marks are taken as an important role in the activist proposal of the documentary. The dissertation starts with a reflection on the intrinsic role of language in the process of modernity/coloniality (MIGNOLO, 2015), and then it discusses the tensions and concessions of language as an instrument in power systems. The modern/colonial world arises from complex articulations, from inventions and structuring violence, from told stories and stories made invisible for the benefit of one history, of erased and silenced voices. Domination implies a struggle for interpretation. In translation, competing visions of worlds are placed in relation, for many times, translators have played a deliberative role that contributes to the maintenance of this status quo. Decolonial methodologies for translation can offer a counter-narrative to this condition (PRICE, 2015). Translators and subtitlers, concerned with the political responsibility of the act of translation and the political function of language, have been engaging and using translation as a powerful tool in the creation of new cultural dynamics. The field of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) studies, particularly subtitling, has been experimenting with paradigms that increasingly comprise sociocultural issues. This is faced with concerns that go beyond the textual aspects. Adherence to the standard norm and neutral Spanish proves to be an inefficient strategy for the translation of certain texts (SANTIAGO VIGATA; MATA, 2019). The methodological part of this work relies on linguistic occurrences to gather patterns that served as a comparable corpus for translation. To this end, 180 minutes of documentaries of the same genre were gathered, with narratives of the subjects in question, to cover the five Latin American dialect regions (MORENO; OTERO, 2016). To indicate the presence of the speech community of collectors of recyclable materials, the visual dialect strategy was used. This comprises the manipulation of orthographic resources–such as conventional typographic symbols–, to represent characteristics of the oral language. Thus, a new translation strategy for subtitling is presented, to give visibility to the community of collectors. The results are subtitles with traces of orality from this speech community.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The aim of this study is to investigate which strategies the sworn interpreter in Suriname uses when performing his work. In Suriname, the Code of Criminal Procedure states that a sworn interpreter must be present during the interrogation of a foreigner at a police station, criminal and civil hearing, at the notary and also during the solemnization of a marriage, but there are no guidelines or protocols to help the professional to carry out his work. This brings us to the interpreter's work as a language and culture mediator, as well as how he thinks he should fulfil his role as an interpreter. Since the presence of the interpreter is essential, it means that he is an important link during the communication process with the foreigner who is in Suriname and for this reason we thought it was important to make an analysis about the way in which the interpreters who are working with the Dutch and Portuguese languages have performed their work so far and for this it is important for us to know what skills the interpreter has. In Suriname the sworn interpreter does not work only in the legal area, but since his work shows many similarities with that of the forensic interpreter, the professional who performs work at the court hearing and in judicial spaces, we have sought support with the theory of Hale (2004) but also with other authors such as Nordin and de Almeida (2017), Lebese (2013), and Gonzalez et al. (1991). In order to carry out this study, a qualitative research was carried out among the small group of interpreters who work with the Dutch and Portuguese languages in order to find out which strategies they apply while working as well as with the parties who have to make use of the work of these professionals. From this analysis we have been able to identify that the sworn interpreter works according to his own intuition and competences. Finally, we proposed a protocol for interpreting based on Codes of Ethics used by the Professional Association of Conference Interpreters in Brazil (APIC) and the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the Australian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (AUSIT). The proposed protocol can serve as a guideline for the interpreters who have been working in this field for some time so that they can continue their work in a uniform manner, as well as for the new generation of interpreters so that they can already start their work in a uniform way.

  • Recent migratory flows to Brazil and the need to redress historical linguistic repression require the State to take a new look at the social needs of individuals who do not speak the official language of the country. The implementation of a language and translation policy is also a condition for access by the migrant, indigenous and deaf population to public service delivery systems. In this sense, charged with the mission of guaranteeing human rights, the Public Defender of the Union (DPU) created the Translation

Coordination (CTRAD), in partnership with the University of Brasilia (UnB), to expand and improve the legal assistance services provided to immigrants in Brazil. Initially responsible for the translation of procedural documents, the CTRAD, faced with the exponential increase in the demands of people who are not fluent in Portuguese, has been expanding its activities with the creation of a linguistic mediation service between the public agent and the person requesting the right. The growth in demands related to translation and interpretation reveals the need to institutionalise translation policies, mostly implemented by civil society. To support these actions, we sought to establish a diagnosis of the sociolinguistic situation of the DPU in this context, by collecting data from the service sectors of the various units of the DPU, interpreters with experience in public service and institutional instruments. Questionnaires were applied to the units and the interpreters to find out about the difficulties and linguistic needs in the places of service, and the institutional instruments were analysed in search of instructions for serving people who speak other languages. The results reveal, on the one hand, the linguistic challenges faced according to the types of interaction between rights claimants and public agents and, on the other hand, the great helplessness of the institutions in the face of these challenges. Based on them, we suggest actions to be implemented by the DPU that reduce this institutional vacuum in favour of access to justice.
