Within the framework of translation studies, this dissertation analyses the correspondence of Caroline Schlegel-Schelling (1763-1809), a little-known author and translator of the Jena Circle and German Pre-Romanticism, focusing on the translation of two letters written during the Napoleonic invasions. The study analyses the articulation between translation, history and alterity from the perspective of German Pre-Romanticism, arguing that socio-political instability and constant foreign threat are fundamental to understanding Caroline's epistolary writing. The letters, marked by the urgency of life, uncertainties and reflections on the Other, are analysed in the light of the practice of translation, understood as a network of exchange between eighteenth-century German and contemporary Portuguese. The translation not only reveals aspects of a unique epistolary writing, but also highlights the presence of a revolutionary woman in the context of her time.

This dissertation addresses the theme of accessible tourism based on the intersemiotic translation of Brasília's (Plano Piloto) tourist and cultural itinerary, a requirement for obtaining a master's degree in translation studies at UNB- Brasília University. This dissertation is an exploratory study and aims to propose the accessible virtual mediation of a tourist itinerary in Brasília according to the models of semiotic analysis and intersemiotic translation of Lúcia Santaella 2002 and Julio Plaza 2010 respectively. This itinerary includes tourist and cultural points located in Asa Norte, Asa Sul and Eixo Monumental. The semiotic analysis of the so-called accessible tourist and cultural spots in the Brasília region allowed us to identify the main aspects (such as the description of colors and textures, the use of simple and accessible language, and the inclusion of elements that stimulate the senses and enrich the visitors' experience, such as sounds and aromas) to be considered in the elaboration of mediation that includes people with physical, visual, auditory, and intellectual disabilities as well as understanding whether the tourist, when visiting an accessible tourist spot, identifies with the place or develops a sense of belonging.

This dissertation proposes an analysis of the word "sea" within the novel Dom Casmurro (1899) by Machado de Assis, using as a foundation the principles of language as described by Cognitive Linguistics (a theoretical group initiated in the United States by independent scholars such as George Lakoff and Charles Fillmore) and the application of these concepts to literature according to Cognitive Poetics, particularly Stockwell's (2002) perspective. The analysis is conducted in relation to the intertextual context of the novel, and the translation suggested at the end of the analysis does not encompass the entire novel nor all mentions of the word, but rather selected excerpts deemed relevant. The research's purpose is to investigate the translation process through the lens of cognitive studies and demonstrate the potential advantages of integrating the two fields (thus, the process itself is the focus). For understanding the notion of context, the theory of Frames (FILLMORE, 1982), the concepts of MCI and Domain (LANGACKER, 1987), and the theory of Mental Spaces (FAUCONNIER, 1994) are employed. To better analyze the interaction between the two literary worlds in terms of intertextuality, the theory of Conceptual Blending (FAUCONNIER, 1997) is used, aiming primarily to explore the theoretical potential in the intersection of cognitive studies and the field of translation.

This study is part of the research line Theory, Criticism, and History of Translation, within the area of concentration Translation in Context. The research describes the translation project of the preface and Chapters I and VIII from the fascicle Les Champignons Hallucinogènes du Mexique: études ethnologiques, taxinomiques, biologiques, physiologiques et chimiques, by Roger Heim and Robert Gordon Wasson, published in France in 1958, about the sacred mushrooms of Mexico. The study aims to promote a critical reading that exposes the coloniality inherent in Western scientific discourse regarding these mushrooms. This research investigates translation as a crucial tool to unveil the coloniality present in historical texts on psychedelic science. The objective is to demonstrate how translation can reveal the colonial dynamics that permeate these texts, allowing a more critical reading that expands the understanding of the power relations that often shape scientific production. The premise of the study shows that, despite their importance to the history and studies of psychoactive mushrooms, these texts reflect a colonial logic. The European and American researchers who wrote them treated Indigenous peoples merely as informants, exoticized and decontextualized their knowledge and practices, and transformed them into commodities. This process involved biopiracy, appropriation, and the erasure of Indigenous narratives, converting traditional knowledge into patents, luxury products, and studies often conducted without consent to serve the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. The study is based on three main theoretical pillars: indirect translation, annotated translation, and translation as criticism of coloniality. Indirect translation is a key aspect, as one of the texts was first translated from English into French before being translated into Portuguese. The annotated translation in this study serves as an invitation to critical reflection, encouraging the reader not only to consume the translated material passively but also to recognize its contradictions, gaps, and impacts. Translation as criticism makes it possible to highlight the layers of coloniality embedded in these texts, revealing that the history of psychedelic science is neither neutral nor impartial. The methodology consists of an annotated translation, with the translator’s notes that highlight the lexical and discursive choices of the original authors that resulted in erasures, cultural appropriations, and the exoticization of Indigenous peoples and their practices.

This research proposes the development of a Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras) of Automotive Terms, a material designed to address the lack of accessibility in content related to driver's licensing and automotive mechanics. Initially, the right of Deaf individuals to drive was investigated by analyzing the process of obtaining a National Driver’s License (CNH), linguistic accessibility, and the challenges in understanding automotive terms. The study also highlighted the importance of translating and interpreting technical content, as well as the need for accessible materials and visual resources on automotive mechanics and traffic safety. In the field of Translation Studies, the complexity of translation between Libras and Portuguese was explored, addressing key issues such as the role of translators and interpreters in mediating meanings and adapting theoretical and practical content. The objective of this research was to promote the linguistic and educational inclusion of Deaf individuals in the automotive field through the creation of the Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras). The adopted methodology involved selecting and validating signterms through terminological records, videos, and field research. The selected audiovisual sources were essential for constructing the lexicon, covering topics such as traffic legislation, automotive mechanics, and road signs. To develop the material, 29 technical terms from the field were selected, followed by the creation of terminological records and the stages of verification and registration of the signs used to represent them. The study aimed to ensure precise correspondence between Libras signs and Portuguese concepts, guaranteeing greater accuracy in technical communication. The field research included the participation of Deaf individuals and approximately 30 hearing participants, enabling discussions on the adopted signs and their suitability to the automotive context. The results demonstrated a high level of acceptance among participants, indicating that the evaluated signs were considered precise and appropriate, consolidating the reliability of the developed material. It is expected that the Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Portuguese/Libras) of Automotive Terms will contribute to the production of other terminological works in different technical fields, expanding accessibility and strengthening the inclusion of Deaf individuals in various areas of knowledge.

In recent last few decades, Brazil has become the destination for thousands of immigrants from different parts of the world, who arrive here for various reasons. Among the main causes for the increase in global migration are wars, social conflicts, economic crises, climate change and the spread of international organized crime. So the Brazilian Judiciary has been faced with a growing number of cases involving foreign defendants, especially from Latin American countries (BRASIL,2024, p.75-83), accused of various crimes, with International Drug Trafficking being the most recurrent among them. Faced with this scenario, the Judiciary must adopt measures capable of guaranteeing these defendants the rights and guarantees provided for in the Federal Constitution and other legal diplomas in our legal system. One of the main measures is to guarantee their linguistic rights, since many do not speak our vernacular - the Portuguese language. After all, this is the only way to ensure their rights to ample defense and contradiction during the course of the criminal proceedings. To this end, the linguistic-cultural mediation of a forensic interpreter is essential. Through their work (provided for in articles 193 and 223 of the CPP), they will enable the defendants to be linguistically present during procedural acts. Although the importance of the interpreter is recognized, there are not enough qualified forensic interpreters in Brazil to meet the demands of the judiciary (NORDIN, 2018, p.11). Hence this search aims to highlight the important role of the forensic interpreter as a social and public agent, demonstrating the socio-cultural relevance of Translation as a tool to safeguard Human Rights, in particular the Linguistic Rights of immigrants from countries where Spanish is the official language. In addition, through this study, we aim to demonstrate how challenging legal translation/interpretation is, as it requires knowledge of the specialty language of Law. We also sought to contribute to the training of new interpreters by preparing terminographic material in the light of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT), which defines terms as conceptual and denominative units directly linked to a field of expertise, in this case, Criminal Law. Thus, adopting the communicative bias of TCT for terminological selection, we created a unidirectional bilingual vocabulary (Portuguese>Spanish) of legal terms extracted from their natural environment of occurrence, i.e. International Drug Trafficking sentences. In this sense, Corpus Linguistics works as a methodology associated with Terminology and Translation, collaborating in the identification, corpus compilation and selection of terms in Portuguese, as well as pointing out the probable equivalents in Spanish. In this way, we hope that the legal vocabulary will serve as teaching material, which can contribute to the training and professional qualification of new forensic interpreters/translators, as well as a source of consultation and research for professionals who already work in this field.

In the context of international cultural exchanges, reflecting on the literary movement between Senegal and Brazil is essential for understanding the literary ties between the two countries. This research draws on data from publishers’ catalogs (French, Brazilian, and Senegalese) and bibliographic databases—such as WorldCat, the Catálogo de Teses e Dissertações da CAPES (CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog), and the Cheikh Anta Diop University Digital Library—to offer a comprehensive overview of the literary relationship between Senegal and Brazil through the translations produced and circulated in both nations. Based on these sources, we analyze the evolution of intellectual exchanges and highlight the role of translation in shaping these connections. Our theoretical framework is grounded in the concept of translation as relation, particularly in the works of Henri Meschonnic (1999), Édouard Glissant (1990), Antoine Berman (1984), and Pascale Casanova (2008), along with contributions from scholars such as Dominique Aury (1963) and Jean-Louis Cordonnier (1995).

Artificial intelligence has sought to position itself as a support tool for promoting accessibility for people with visual impairments. However, the lack of adequate audio description in educational materials still represents a significant challenge, limiting blind students' access to essential visual content in the learning process—especially in fields such as language teaching, where vocabulary and visual context play a fundamental role in knowledge construction. In this context, the general objective of this research is to evaluate image audio descriptions from the Spanish textbook Gente Única generated by artificial intelligence tools, based on audio description guidelines (Motta, 2016). The theoretical framework approaches audio description as a mode of intersemiotic translation, essential for the inclusion of people with visual impairments in language learning. The study also discusses the role of AI as a support tool for accessibility, highlighting its potential to produce automatic audio descriptions. A qualitative, exploratory-descriptive methodological approach is adopted, through which audio descriptions generated by AI tools—such as ChatGPT, Zapia, Be My Eyes, Lookout, and Copilot—are evaluated based on criteria such as the description of characters, settings, use of verb tense, and interpretative impartiality. The results indicate that although AIs show potential to generate audio descriptions, there are significant limitations, such as a lack of detail in describing characters and settings, the absence of frame identification, and the omission of contextual information.

The main objective of this present work has been to conduct research about book subscription clubs for children, focused on children's audience, analyzing the amount of translation and national books in these services. The cut for the analysis is done with the selection of books for the age group of 7 years old in the clubs Minha Pequena Feminista, Leiturinha and Quindim. In addition, we also discussed the fact of not translating languages but subjects and statements (Meschonnic, 2010). As secondary objectives, I will make an analysis of texts translated from different languages and countries in the study section and a survey of the translators' women present. The work is justified by the investigation of literary genre for children in the field of translation, assisting in the systematization of information that contributes to research in the area of literature translation for children (Aseff, 2012). With the analysis of the graphs generated through a quantitative research, it is perceived a higher percentage of Brazilian literature (national) within the cutting. Already among the translations are noticeable some asymmetries of power in the literary system (Venuti, 2019), and that reflects on translation policies (Santos; Francisco, 2018) and ethnocentrism present in the quantitative difference of translations from certain countries to the detriment of others (Oustinoff, 2011). Finally, I observe the influence of the school system on the market preferences of literature for children (Lima, 2018) and the presence of women translators in the translation market of this segment of literature.

For this research, within the field of Translation Studies, a comparative analysis was proposed on how Ruth Barros's Brazilian translation of The Woman's Bible, entitled “A Bíblia para as Mulheres” (2019), aligns with Elizabeth Cady Stanton's feminist perspective (1895), and to what extent it converges with or diverges from the traditional thematic adaptation “A Bíblia da Mulher” (2003) from João Ferreira de Almeida. The objective is to explore how Feminist Translation Studies engage with these texts, particularly in analyzing how they represent the concept of “woman.” In this approach, Stanton challenged the orthodox religious perspective of the 19th century by revising biblical passages that referred to women, demonstrating that the Bible was not written directly by God but rather interpreted through patriarchal lenses. In doing so, she contested the ideas of female guilt and divinely ordained submission. Given this historical context, the research analyzes biblical verses with subversive connotations, drawing on the concept of translation as a cultural and social practice (Sherry Simon, 1996), in dialogue with translation and gender studies (Luise Von Flotow, 1997). The hermeneutics of suspicion approach, as developed by Paul Ricoeur (1986), is used to investigate how these translations and interpretations shape representations of gender, power, and identity in society. This study contributes to broadening the debate on the impact of translation in constructing new perspectives on gender and religion within the Brazilian context, thereby strengthening the field of Feminist Translation Studies.

Translation Studies (T.S.) have evolved to encompass an increasingly broad range of interactions between culture, language, and style, especially in the field of re-translation. The present research proposes a theoretical expansion, centered on the narratives of popular fairy tales, to examine re-translation as an autonomous and dynamic phenomenon, based on contemporary authors such as Vitor Alevato do Amaral, who advocates a polyglot, intertextual, and polyphonic approach to "re-translating" in his article "Broadening the Notion of Retranslation" (2019). A product of interdisciplinary collaboration between Translation Studies, Folklore Studies, Comparative Literature, and the "Theory of Functions", the research aims to explore, experimentally and theoretically, the limitation of the re-translation concept to the relationship between two languages, as argued by Amaral. Although complex, the integration of these disciplines enriches the analysis, allowing for the exploration of cultural nuances and literary transformations that occur over time, aligned with the expansion of this still underexplored concept. The "Hypothesis of Non-Univocity in the Retranslation of Fairy Tales", proposed by the author, serves as a starting point for analyzing the recreation of oral and written narratives, addressing the re-translation's ability to preserve the cultural and stylistic nuances of the original while (i) responding to linguistic and cultural changes in the target audience, (ii) dialoguing with its previous versions, and (iii) allowing the translator to keep the "soul" or essence of the original alive. Finally, it is argued that the observable and essential constitutive aspects of the existence of the popular fairy tale—such as the perpetual oral recreation—may contribute to redefining re-translation as an essentially multilingual and transcreative phenomenon, which more frequently operates in a context of plurality of voices, languages, and cultures than in the restrictions traditionally imposed by bilingualism.

In this dissertation, we aim to present a translation of Brasília's "Rock Route" into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), highlighting how musical culture and cultural spaces are crucial for identity construction and linguistic inclusion within Brasília's deaf community. We emphasize the significance of theoretical and practical approaches that render the translation process more conscious and humane. The main objective of this dissertation is to propose an annotated translation of Brasília’s Rock Route, specifically within the language pair Portuguese–Libras. Additionally, our specific objectives include: i. developing translation competencies relevant to the rock-themed translation project; ii. identifying how culture has become a significant element in Translation Studies and how cultural spaces have facilitated linguistic accessibility concerning Brazilian Sign Language (Libras); and iii. analyzing the translation diary through an annotated translation grounded in the functionalist theory proposed by Christiane Nord. To achieve these objectives, we conducted a literature review of rock music history, identified relevant authors in Cultural Translation Studies, and adopted a methodology based on Christiane Nord's Functionalist Model. This methodological approach was divided into three stages: a. translation project, b. logbook, and c. annotated translation. Upon completion of the translation process, the annotated translation analysis revealed that culture is fundamental in the translation process into Libras, enabling deaf individuals in Brasília to forge their local identity. Furthermore, the importance of creating a specialized glossary in this field was identified, alongside the necessity for translation studies in cultural contexts to be incorporated into the training of Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (TILSP).

In this dissertation, we present an exploratory study that proposes translation solutions for the inherent characteristics of the fantasy literary genre, particularly the shared sense of estrangement between character and reader, which defines the genre. We seek to describe the process of translating fantasy literature from Brazilian Portuguese to Libras (Língua Brasileira de Sinais), to analyze the translation of fantastic elements to Libras through imagery descriptors, and demonstrate the preservation of inherent characteristics of the genre, especially the estrangement. To this end, we selected excerpts from Sarah J. Mass's book House of Earth and Blood (2022) and organized them into three stages of the translation process: Representation of Reality, Estrangement, and Insertion of the Fantastic Element, totaling fifteen excerpts. Subsequently, we developed the translation project following the analysis of the extratextual and intratextual elements of the text as addressed by Nord (2016), organizing the translation process as a Translation Project, Logbook, and Commented Translation. The theoretical framework for this discussion includes: Todorov (2008) and Roas (2014) on fantasy literature; Dollerup (2014) on the indirect translation approach used in this research; as well as Nord (2016) and Barbosa and Costa (2022) on the functionalist bias. We also include other authors who discuss and contribute to the topic. Data analysis showed us that the translation strategies and solutions were satisfactory in maintaining the fundamental characteristic of fantasy literature in the target language: estrangement. However, for the translation to be effective, a Glossary in Libras was incorporated during the process to translate proper names and magical creatures, bringing creative solutions to the final result of the proposed translations. We also conclude that, despite this being a pioneering study, the topic addressed is extremely important for Translation studies, an area that lacks research and academic materials on Libras translations of Fantasy literature.

The research line adopted in this work is Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices from the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (Postrad/UnB). Its object of study is the translation process of institutional informative content produced by the Department of Traffic of the Federal District (Detran/DF) into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), with an emphasis on the specialized lexicon related to obtaining a Driver's License (CNH). The target audience includes Deaf individuals and users of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) who wish to obtain a CNH—commonly known as a driver's license—as well as translators, interpreters, examiners, instructors, and others interested in the field. Thus, the objective is to translate information from Portuguese into Libras, making it available in the form of video guides on the official social media channels of Detran/DF, in order to broaden Deaf people's access to legal guidelines and promote accessibility. The specific research objectives consist of: i) researching existing laws and rights regarding the right of Deaf people to drive and obtain a CNH; ii) analyzing Translation and Interpretation Studies of Sign Languages (ETILS) in search of research focused on translation; and iii) reviewing websites of other State Traffic Departments (Detrans) to verify whether there is formative and informative content available in Libras. The theoretical framework was divided into three parts: the first part deals with translation studies; the second with translation and interpretation studies of sign languages; and finally, with translation processes. The methodological approach was divided into five steps: i) identification of the objective and target audience; ii) receipt of videos sent by the Communication Department of Detran/DF (Ascom); iii) organization of the translation project and preparation of glosses, based on references from Nord (1991, 2005), Barbosa (2004), and Santiago (2012); iv) recording of videos in Libras and translation (voice-over) following the principles of Xavier (2022); and v) validation of the recordings with the Libras team working in the Graduate Program in Translation Studies (Postrad/UnB) and with the team of the “Libras tem Voz” program from the Communication Department of Detran/DF. As a result, nine video guides were produced, offering information in Libras for obtaining a CNH. The set of video guides produced in the project demonstrated that it is possible to combine accessibility, communicative quality, and social commitment in a single product.

This research, aligned with Translation Studies and Sign Language Terminology, focuses on the legal vocabulary of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT, Brazil). The study aims to create bilingual videoguides (Portuguese-Brazilian Sign Language, Libras) to ensure linguistic accessibility for the Deaf community, as mandated by Brazilian laws (10.436/2002, 5.626/2005, and 13.146/2015). Methodologically, it adopts a socioterminological approach (Gaudin, 1991; Faulstich, 2016) in three phases: (i) mapping juridical sign-terms in media materials; (ii) validation with Deaf signers and legal experts; (iii) production of multimodal videoguides (Libras, subtitles, audio). Key results include: (a) identification of 35 juridical sign-terms; (b) development of three institutional videoguides hosted on the MPDFT portal; (c) a semi-bilingual glossary accessible via QR code. The study concludes that terminological standardization and assistive technologies are pivotal to enforce Deaf communities’ right to legal information, promoting autonomy and social inclusion.

Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908), one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian culture, with over 200 short stories to his name, is regarded as a master of the short story genre. To this day, the classic works of Machado de Assis have not lost their relevance; on the contrary, his timeless works continue to gain recognition both in Brazil and internationally, mainly through the translation of his literary works. This dissertation focuses on Machado de Assis’s short story O alienista (1882), aiming to carry out a comparative descriptive analysis of five English translations and their comparison with the source text, focusing on the translation of Machadian allusions with contrapuntal irony (Bakhtin, 2010; Cherlin, 2017; Hutcheon, 1995), addressing the issue of the translator’s (in)visibility (Venuti, 2004) and identifying the predominant translation strategy (Venuti, 2004; Toury, 2012). The corpus consists of the original version of O alienista, available in the Public Domain, and the following translations: The Psychiatrist (T1) in The Psychiatrist and Other Stories (1963), translated by William Grossman and published by University of California Press (USA); The Alienist (T2) in The Alienist and Other Stories of 19th Century Brazil (2013), translated by John Charles Chasteen and published by Hackett Publishing (USA); The Psychiatrist (T3) in Stories (2014), translated by Rhett McNeil and published by Dalkey Archive Press (USA); The Alienist (T4) in The Collected Stories of Machado de Assis (2018), translated by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson and published by Liveright Publishing Corporation (USA); The Alienist (T5) in The Looking Glass: Essential Stories (2022), translated by Daniel Hahn and published by Pushkin Press (UK). This descriptive case study is based on Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory (1990, 2010), Holmes’s model (2004) as expanded by Toury (2012); and Venuti’s concept of translator’s (in)visibility (2004). The comparative analysis is based on the framework proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp (1985), as well as on the theories of scholars such as Leppihalme (1997), Lefevere (2007), Aubert (1998), Molina and Hurtado Albir (2002), among others. The results show that the analyzed translations follow three main directions: 1) domestication (acceptability), with medium to high translator’s invisibility (T1, T2); 2) a balanced approach between domestication and foreignization (acceptability/adequacy), with low translator’s visibility; 3) foreignization (adequacy), with medium to high translator’s visibility (T4, T5)

This study proposes an analysis of inter- and intralinguistic translation processes applied to a medical work, with the aim of facilitating the understanding of the message by the public affected by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of EDS diagnoses in Brazil, a phenomenon that can be seen both in the expansion of clinics specializing in the treatment of hypermobility and in the organization of educational events aimed at disseminating information about the disease and its consequences. Despite these advances, it appears that much of the communication directed at patients still uses excessively technical language, making it difficult for lay individuals to fully understand. Given this gap, the present work proposes a linguistic adaptation that aims to democratize medical knowledge. To this end, excerpts from the French-language work Ehlers-Danlos, La maladie oubliée par la médecine, by Dr. Claude Hamonet, were selected and analyzed, which were then subjected to inter- and intralinguistic translation processes, resulting in the planning for future production of an informational booklet in Brazilian Portuguese. Considering the invisible but highly incapacitating nature of EDS, it is essential that patients have access to informational materials in their native language, written in accessible language. This measure not only facilitates understanding of the clinical manifestations of the disease but also contributes to the validation of their complaints before the specialized medical community.

This dissertation investigates the use of Yorùbá language as an identity and cultural marker in Candomblé, both within religious temples and in digital environments. Situated within the field of Translation Studies, the research approaches Yorùbá as a form of symbolic resistance, carrying untranslatable meanings that are essential to the preservation of African worldviews. Adopting a qualitative methodology, the study examined social media posts from religious institutions, identifying recurrent Yorùbá terms, orthographic variations, and translation strategies. The findings indicate that
non-translation and the preservation of original spelling are common practices, closely tied to identity affirmation, cultural resistance, and the transmission of ancestral knowledge. This work contributes to expanding the understanding of translation as a political and decolonial practice, emphasizing the importance of preserving lexicon and orality in strengthening Afro-Brazilian identity.

Considering the current scenario in Translation Studies—where approaches such as Feminist Translation have gained increasing recognition within the academic field—this paper proposes a reflection on the impact of Luise von Flotow's feminist discourse in academic publications in the area. The research is based on the perspective of intersectional feminism, as developed by bell hooks (1981), and is situated within the context of the fourth wave of feminism, which began around 2012. The main objective is to position the author and translator Luise von Flotow within the landscape of Feminist Translation in Brazil, taking into account her significant contribution to the consolidation of this line of study. Building on works such as those by Macias-Chapula (1998) and Moyano and Gómez (2020), which theorize how the systematic collection of information can provide an overview of what is produced in a field of knowledge, I propose a bibliometric study of master's and doctoral theses defended in Brazil, using the CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog as a source. CAPES is a federal government foundation focused on promoting academic research. The temporal scope from 2013 to 2025 is adopted to cover the most recent period, corresponding to the strengthening of the fourth wave of feminism, and is also linked to the Sucupira Platform, which collects and catalogs all postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) productions in the country. Furthermore, I use search terms to strategically guide the research and access published works related to Translation Studies, enabling my reflection on the topic. After filling out a technical data sheet, with the aim of creating graphs presenting a quantitative analysis of the most cited works and the year in which Flotow is most referenced, a qualitative reflection is proposed. By identifying 2022 as the year with the highest recurrence in the graphs, I propose a view of the post-pandemic scenario and the widespread use of the internet as a research and advocacy tool, which facilitated broad visibility of debates on women’s rights, feminism, and feminist translation.

The dissemination of K-dramas in Brazil has historically been linked to fansubbing. Their growing popularity over the past decade has led many audiovisual companies, particularly streaming platforms, to invest in translating the South Korean TV dramas into Portuguese. This study focuses on subtitling aspects related to expressions that are closely associated with the Korean culture and unfamiliar to the Brazilian culture with an emphasis on the subtitling of the K-drama Reply 1988 (2016) to Portuguese. The aim of the research was to compare the translation techniques adopted in professional and amateur subtitling, identifying tendencies toward the conservation or substitution of CSIs present in the first two episodes of the K-drama Reply 1988 (2016). The theoretical and methodological framework for defining and delimiting tendencies toward conservation and substitution is based on Aixelá (1996), who defines such culturally bound expressions as Culture-Specific Items (CSIs), and on Espindola (2005) for the thematic categorization of these expressions. The study is predominantly qualitative, supported by quantitative data. A total of 686 occurrences of CSIs were analyzed. The quantitative results indicated that both, fan subtitling and professional subtitling, showed a tendency toward the conservation of CSIs, albeit to different degrees. Fan subtitling, represented by the Viki platform, conserved 71.87% of the occurrences, whereas professional subtitling, represented by Netflix, conserved 53.06%. The qualitative analysis revealed that strategies, such as extratextual gloss, were employed exclusively in fan subtitling and were not identified in professional subtitling. This finding suggests that although professional subtitling has shown similarities compared to amateur subtitling, especially in regard to the conservation of CSIs, it still shows resistance to adopting translation strategies typically associated with fansubbing practices. Furthermore, the results by thematic category demonstrated that, in the translation of expressions related to cuisine and to dialectal expressions, interjections, and insults, substitution was the predominant strategy adopted. We concluded that the tendency toward the conservation or substitution of CSIs is not related solely to the nature of the translation, whether fan or professional, but also to platform conventions, the target audience, and the thematic category of the CSIs analyzed.

This research was developed within the line of Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (POSTRAD/UnB). The object of study focused on the conceptual terms essential for understanding and filling out the Income Tax Return (IR), targeting Deaf individuals, translators, interpreters, and other stakeholders in the field. The general objective was to collect, record, and organize term-signs in a bilingual glossary related to Accounting Sciences, with emphasis on the Income Tax Return. The specific objectives were: (i) to establish specific aspects of Portuguese–Libras translation in specialized texts; (ii) to investigate existing research on term-signs, with a focus on Terminology and Translation; (iii) to analyze the organization of bilingual lexicographic works (Libras/Portuguese); (iv) to identify the process of translating entries between Libras and Portuguese; and (v) to elaborate a bilingual glossary of Accounting Sciences, highlighting the specificities of the translation process in sign language. The research addressed topics such as lexicon and terminology from the perspective of the Brazilian Deaf community, strategies for communicating financial concepts to Deaf people, financial education from this perspective, silenced financial challenges, access to information and tax education for Deaf individuals, as well as the impact of the IRPF on the household economy of the Deaf population. Interdisciplinary perspectives on tax education and social inclusion were also considered. The methodological path was structured in six stages. The first involved data collection and definition of the target audience. The second, called Term-Sign Recording, encompassed the selection of signs and a bibliographic review of the concepts. The third stage focused on the organization of term-signs, with the production of photos, videos, and editing carried out at the Núcleo Varlibras Laboratory. In the fourth stage, translation and digital dissemination were undertaken, with the videos uploaded to YouTube and linked to the bilingual glossary through QR codes. The fifth stage corresponded to the definition of the macrostructure of the glossary, and the sixth to the organization of the microstructure. As a result, 30 terms were selected, prioritizing the translation of accounting concepts into Libras, in line with the sociocultural practices of the Deaf community. This ensured that the content was accessible and culturally appropriate, thus promoting understanding and the exercise of citizenship in the context of the Income Tax Return.
